Good Deeds Don't Go Unnoticed

The following letter was sent to FUMA after a young lady was searching the internet for an event being held in Slidell, LA. Last year a team of FUMA faculty and staff went to the Gulf Coast to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. A year later they are thanked for their efforts and sacrifice.

Dear FUMA:

I was searching for some information on an event here in Slidell when I came across your story posted on the website. You described your time spent here in Slidell while you were helping out in the clean up after Hurricane Katrina. I have to admit it still brings tears to my eyes to know that so many wonderful people from all over reached out to help in our time of need. I had actually evacuated the day before the storm and spent 2 months with my sister in Florida so I had no knowledge of what my home town looked like or if I even had a home to come back to. The time away seemed like an eternity and the news never seemed to show what I needed to know. When I finally did make the drive home it was probably the saddest day I experienced in years. I had to make my way on I-10 along the Gulf Coast in order to get home. The devastation that far inland was incredible. When I finally arrived in Slidell and saw all the debris and felt such a heavy sense of heartache in the air I just cried. Imagine the joy I felt when I pulled into the driveway of my home which was still there! The only scars were those covered by blue tarps on my roof and I lost all of my trees which had been chopped up and moved to the side of the street. I felt incredibly blessed and so overwhelmingly guilty for rejoicing when so many people lost pretty much everything.

I guess no one will ever truly understand the full magnitude of the destruction here unless they see it in person. Slidell is coming along very well. We're a little over populated with all the people from the New Orleans and Mississippi areas. But we always have room to grow. It seems like people have picked up their lives and started fresh. What I have enjoyed most is seeing how we're helping each other more. That seems to be something people just don't have time for anymore. It makes us realize that life is precious and we need to appreciate each other while we're here.

I just wanted to take this time to tell you and your group thank you for taking time out of your lives to come here and help us. Even though we never met I feel that it is a great honor to have had all of you here. Bless you all for everything you brought to the lives of everyone you touched.

Take care,

Stacey

FUMA Wins Albemarle Invitational

Two weeks after a tough meet at Maymont Park the FUMA harriers returned to their winning ways with a convincing win at the Albemarle Invitational. Axel Mostrag won the individual title with a 16:07 performance. It was Mostrag's second invitational win this season. Szymon Rola was also in the top ten finishing eighth. The appeared close for most of the way until the final mile when seniors David Johnson and Jamie Reichlen steadily moved up through the pack. Johnson would nearly catch FUMA three- man Jeremy Haney. Reichlen was the meets first fifth man to finish. Also having a big day was sophomore Caleb Haney and junior Patrick Hayes. Caleb Haney finished eighth in the highly competitive JV race and Patrick Hayes was one of the top sixth man finishers.

The Albemarle Invitational represented the end of the Invitational season. FUMA had its most successful season ever for Invitationals as the varsity won four of the five they entered. Next up for the team is a meet at Collegiate on the 24th and then two championship meets in November.

2006 Graduate Receives AP Scholar Award

Jarvis Johnson, a 2006 graduate, received the AP Scholar Award by the College Board in recognition of his exceptional achievement on the college level Advanced Placement Program (AP) exams. Jarvis is from Breckenridge, CO and is currently attending college in Australia. His AP grade average was 4.75 out of 5.0.

The College Board's Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take the challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.3 million high school students in 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took the AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar. The faculty and staff at the Academy congratulate Jarvis on his accomplishments and wish him all the best for future success!

Jr. Prep Plays St. Christopher's

The Blue Devils played a hard fought game that saw a good showing by the offense and defense. The offense again was plagued with two turnovers and four crucial penalties that halted 6 drives. The offense was led by freshman quarterback Randall Baker who completed 60% of his passes for 55 yards. The Blue Devils were led by Andy Tembon in rushing with 9 carries for 86 yards. Also, Jarred Johnson had 7 carries for 48 yards. Among Baker's receiving corps included Jamil Shaw (2 receptions for 35 (2 receptions for 8 yards).

The defense had another good showing highlighted by Jonathan Witt's blocked punt and return for a TD. The defense struggled earlier, but made some nice adjustments.

The Debate Team Brings Home a 5th Place Trophy

Members of the Debate Team competed in their first tournament on Saturday at Madison County High School. They departed from the campus at 6:30 AM and returned around 7:00 PM. Five cadets were able to challenge themselves in the areas of research, writing, organization, note taking, thinking on their feet and oratory skills as they prepared for and then competed in three different events.

Tanner Clements and John McManus competed in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Their topic was: "Resolved: A just government should provide health care to its citizens." They prepared to argue the affirmative side as well as the negative side of this issue. At each tournament competitors typically compete in four rounds, two affirmative rounds and two negative rounds.

Jake Hargrove competed in Extemporaneous Speaking. In this event contestants deliver speeches in three rounds. Prior to the tournament they prepare by learning as much as they can about current events. They practice organization of facts as well as speech delivery. No notes are allowed for a speech which has a minimum time of four and one-half minutes and a maximum time of seven and one-half minutes. In addition, contestants do not know the questions they will be required to speak on until 30 minutes prior to the time they are to begin their delivery. Jake spoke on gay marriage, the potential for civil war in Iraq, and the banning of carry-on items to ensure safety.

The two returning members of the Debate Team, Rob Courtney and Jonathan Blair, competed in Student Congress. Prior to the tournament students write legislation and submit it to the league. The legislation is then disseminated and students research the topics. They prepare three minute authorship speeches for their own bills and resolutions, and prepare affirmative and negative speeches for the legislation submitted by others. Rob's bill was: "Selective Service will now include women, as well as men from the age eighteen and older. Jonathan's bill was: "This bill will further enhance government funding for research to make a greater quantity of more affordable prosthetic limbs available to those wounded in combat."

Congratulations to Rob Courtney who won the fifth place trophy in Student Congress. Rob also became a state qualifier with the privilege to compete in the STATE tournament in March 2007.

The team especially wishes to thank Col. Ransone and Major Henthorne who served as judges and thereby made it possible for the Debate Team to compete.

FUMA's Own, Howard Nippert, Places 5th at World 100K

Fork Union Military Academy's faculty, staff and cadets are waiting eagerly for Howard Nippert's return on Wednesday, October 11th. Nippert, Director of Maintenance at FUMA, traveled to Seoul, Korea to compete in the Ultramarathon 100km World Championship and it was a journey worth taking. Howard came in 5th in the IAU (International Association of Ultra Runners) 100km event. This is the most competitive event in the world bringing together athletes from 22 countries. The race is 62 miles in length. Howard Nippert finished 5th with a time of 6:53.

Todd Giszack, FUMA's Assistant to the President, sent an email earlier this morning to faculty and staff announcing Howard's success in Seoul. He notes, "It's one of the top 10 ever run by an American (with this performance, Howard holds 3 of the top 11) US times ever."

In a recent interview, Howard tells about his training leading up to the race: "I've placed in the top 8 the past 2 years and had a goal of finishing in the top 5 today. The race went out fast. I told my teammates to be patient and stick to the race plan. I did what I wanted and I am very happy to finish 5th wearing this USA singlet. My goal for the past 30 years has been to represent USA and I have been fortunate to make 8 consecutive US teams. This World Championship race is what I train for. The 100K distance defines who I am."

When asked about his training leading up to this year's race Nippert remarked, "From my workouts I knew I was fit and ready to roll. I moved to Fork Union, Virginia this past year to work at Fork Union Military Academy and although the area is not as mountainous as where I used to live, I have used this time to become more efficient at faster paces. I knew from my shorter intervals...the mile repeats and 1000M repeats - that I was much faster than the previous 2 years. At the same time my 4 hour runs were still at a very high level. I felt I could convert that efficiency at faster paces into speed in a road 100K. I knew I was ready. My taper over the past two weeks was right on target. I just needed to get to the starting line because I was beginning to feel like a caged animal that was being poked by a stick." Full results can be viewed at www.iau.org.

Howard has been in the position of Director of Maintenance at the Academy for over a year and he describes it best in his quote above. He cannot be contained for very long - so Howard, where do you go from here?

NFL Films to Focus Their Cameras on FUMA

NFL Films, the winner of more television Emmy Awards than any other sports broadcaster, will soon be focusing their cameras on Fork Union Military Academy, the high school that has produced more NFL football players than any other prep school in the nation.

Fork Union Military Academy is to be the featured subject on an upcoming episode of the highly respected sports documentary show "NFL Films Presents." The documentary series airs on ESPN and the NFL Network and is hosted by Steve Sabol, who individually has won at least thirty of the more than ninety Emmy Awards presented for NFL Films programming.

"Fork Union has a list of alumni in the NFL that would be the pride of any school in the nation," says NFL Films producer Jay Jackson. "But Fork Union is not a football factory. It really is about the body, mind, and spirit there, and Fork Union is as much about academics and molding men of character as it is athletics. We hope to tell that story."

More than seventy alumni of Fork Union Military Academy have played for NFL teams, from the early days of the league until now. More than a dozen active NFL players on this season's rosters attended FUMA, including star wide receivers like Plaxico Burress of the New York Giants, Ernest Wilford of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Billy McMullen of the Minnesota Vikings, as well as other longtime veterans like offensive tackle Roman Oben of the San Diego Chargers and linebacker Dexter Coakley of the St. Louis Rams.

Jackson and his crew members from NFL Films are expected to arrive on campus beginning Wednesday, October 18th and work through the Academy's first full dress parade on Saturday, October 21st, filming scenes of cadet life and education and recording interviews with current students, staff, and notable NFL alumni including Eddie George and Don Majkowski.

On Friday, October 20th the NFL Films cinematographers will record the action at FUMA's much anticipated prep league game with rival Collegiate, kicking off at 3:30pm. All of FUMA's NFL alumni with whom the school has contact are being invited to return for this game and to participate in special halftime ceremonies. The football game is open to the public and all are invited to attend this event, although attendees are advised to bring lawn chairs as stadium seating is expected to fill quickly.

FUMA NFL alumni who are expected to return for this event include Tennessee Titans running back (and Heisman Trophy winner) Eddie George, the FUMA/UVa quarterback Don Majkowski (who was recently inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame), San Francisco Forty-Niners star Tyronne Drakeford, Ken Brown of the Denver Broncos, former Virginia Tech and NFL veteran quarterback Will Furrer (recently inducted into FUMA's Sports Hall of Fame), Jay Sherrill (who kicked for several NFL teams and whose son, Wes Sherrill, is the prep team kicker currently), UVa alumnus (and former Philadelphia Eagle and Minnesota Viking) Merrill Robertson, Duane Ashman of the Denver Broncos, and John Hilton (a Pittsburgh Steeler in the 1960s and former NFL coach).

Other invitees, whose attendance has not been confirmed at this time, include veteran quarterback (and FUMA's first Heisman Trophy winner) Vinny Testaverde, former Dallas Cowboy (and NFC Rookie of the Year) Robert Jones, San Francisco Forty-Niners quarterback Jim Druckenmiller, Green Bay Packers star Tyrone Davis, former Eagle and Patriot Don Oakes, former Green Bay Packer and current head of the Packer's scouting department John Dorsey, former New York Jet Maurice Anderson, former Washington Redskins Steve Hamilton and Brian Kozlowski, and many more.

"Football is one of the only sports where academic success is essential for professional success," said Dan Thompson, the Academy's Director of Communications. "Before a player arrives in the NFL, he must first have succeeded a good college program. We are proud that so many outstanding young men have come to Fork Union for that academic preparation. We are excited to have the incredible filmmakers from NFL Films help tell the story of their success."

FUMA Rains Points Down on St. Christopher's

Game to be played, but no broadcast of St. Chris game today

The prep football game versus St. Christopher's will be played today in the rain, but the wet conditions have made it impossible to produce the radio broadcast of the game. At recent home games, broadcasters from the local ESPN radio affiliate have set up underneath the small coaches' viewing tower at the stadium but this location is too exposed to the elements to use in rainy conditions.

"It's neither wise nor safe to expose thousands of dollars of delicate electronics and computer equipment in wet weather," says Dan Thompson, FUMA's Director of Communications. "The viewing tower currently in place at the football stadium is primarily designed to hold only the coaches, scoreboard operator, and public address announcer. There is simply not enough room to add three or four radio broadcasters with their equipment."

Funds being raised for new press box
The Academy is developing plans to build a new press box facility, and funds are currently being raised for that purpose. The school is in the midst of a $29 million capital campaign to improve facilities and increase scholarship opportunities for students. Over $22 million has been pledged or donated so far and new facilities such as the Aquatic Center and the addition to the Beatty Library have already been completed.

"A modern press box will really help us to improve our communications, radio broadcasts, and video coverage of games, parades, and other events," Thompson adds. "I hope parents and alumni will provide the funding necessary to keep our broadcasts on the air and build the facilities we need."

Persons interested in contributing to this capital campaign effort should contact Cathy Hitchcock (hitchca@fuma.org) for more information.

Sponsors sought
Thompson also encourages parents and alumni to consider becoming a sponsor of the radio broadcasts produced by the Academy, including FUMA Football, Track Talk with Coach Winston Brown, and Shuman Says. Commercial time is being sold to help cover the costs of producing and broadcasting these shows, and parents and alumni who would like to promote their business, organization, or show their support should contact Dan Thompson (thompsod@fuma.org) for information on how to become a sponsor of these programs.
