Fork Union Aquatic Club Off To Great Start

Fork Union Aquatic Club swimmers who practice Monday through Saturday at Fork Union Military Academy's new state-of-the-art aquatic facility brought home over 70 awards from the Lynchburg Season Opener swim invitational at the Jamerson YMCA late September, and the TIDE Fall Classic swim invitational at the Fort Eustis Aquatic Center (Newport News) in October. Over 500 swimmers represented teams from across Virginia and North Carolina at these competitions.

Individual awards in each event were given through 8th place. FUAC swimmers, Stephanie Nardone, Lindsay Price, Leanna Knisley and Harper Campbell brought home first place awards.

Six swimmers, Michelle Caron, Tim Jensen, Josh Brown, Ryan Hedges, Jeremy Gencavage, and Lindsay Price, brought home second place honors. Michelle Caron, Sito Arroyo (11 -12 boy), Dillon Hatch (13 - 15 boy) and Stephanie Nardone also record 3rd place finishes in several events.

In the group relay events, the FUAC team brought home first place awards in the Girls 8 and Under 100 Yard Freestyle Relay and 100 Yard Medley Relay, and a second place finish in the Boys 15 and Older 200 Yard Medley Relay.

Other notable swims came from Maria Arroyo, Sito Arroyo, George Brumbaugh, Cameron Duchene, and the girls 11- 12 age group relay of Callie Price, Katie Wilson, Rebecca Gardella and Maggie Shefski which placed top six. Riley Phillips (13 -14 Boy) and Luke Knisley (9 - 10 Boy) also notched several personal best times on their way to finishing in the top 10 in the 100 Yard Fly (Phillips), 50 Yard Back (Knisley), and 50 Yard Fly (Knisley). Riley competed in the men's 15 and older 200 Yard Freestyle Relay at the TIDE meet.

Jordan Benson (9 - 10 Girl), Alana Casto (11 - Girl), Chris Covington (13 - 14 Boy), Tim Jensen (17 and older male), Cameron Duchene (17 and older male), Josh Brown (15 - 16 male), Jeremy Gencavage (15 - 16 male), and Ryan Hedges (17 and older male) competed in their first USA-Swimming competitions.

Michelle Caron achieved another coveted USA Swimming "A" time in the 100 Yard Backstroke. Seven swimmers achieved USA Swimming "BB" times: Sito Arroyo, Maria Arroyo, George Brumbaugh, Jeremy Gencavage, Ryan Hedges, Tim Jensen, and Dillon Hatch.

Eight swimmers achieved USA Swimming "B" times: Josh Brown, Jeremy Gencavage, Ryan Hedges, Luke Knisley, Callie Price, Riley Phillips, Maggie Shefski and Katie Wilson.

In the coming months the team will be competing at competitions in the Charlottesville, Richmond, Lynchburg and Tidewater areas, Virginia Tech, UVA and JMU.

Fork Union Aquatic Club is a USA-Swimming team open to the public for membership. We train at the new Fork Union Military Academy Aquatic Center from 5:00 - 7:15 pm, Monday through Friday, and Saturday mornings. The team is open to swimmers from the novice thorough elite ability level. In November we are also starting a learn-to-swim program that will be associated with the club.
