Jr. Prep Over St. Anne's Belfield 20-14
FUMA's defense does it again! The Jr. Prep defense muscled away three interceptions in the game (Bailey returned for a TD, Cantello, and Williams), while coming up with many key stops. The most important was in overtime. The offense moved the ball well again, but was hindered by mental mistakes and plagued by four turnovers which turned into 8 points for St. Anne's Belfield. The highlight of the offense was in overtime, when the Jahmeal Quarles-Belt ran a boot leg pass to Jamal Hunter for 10 yards, and a one INCH run by Quarles-Belt capped off the two play series and secured the victory!
Andy Tembon 11 Carries for 51 Yards and a 2PT Conversion.
Brief offensive statistics are as follows:
AJ Bailey 3 Carries for 6 Yards.
Anthony Williams 1 Carry for 13 Yards and 2 Receptions for 14 Yards.
Jamal Hunter 1 Reception for 10 Yards.
John Cantello 1 Reception for 2 Yards.
Jahmeal Quarles-Belt 8 Carries for 4 Yards 2 TD's and he was 5 of 17 passing for 21 Yards and 1 INT.
The Blue Devils are next in action on Thursday, October 5th at St. Christopher's School in Richmond, VA at 4:00 p.m.

Mental Errors Plague Jr. Prep Football
Mental errors plagued the Jr. Prep football team last night against Cosby High School (Chesterfield, VA). For the start of the game the Blue Devils plagued themselves with penalties, fumbles, and mistakes. The Blue Devils had no problem moving the ball during the game; however, three fumbles and a touchdown called back because of a penalty proved to be big plays that saw FUMA loose 6 to 8. The only score was by the quarterback Jahmeal Quarles-Belt on a 2 yard option in the third quarter. The 2 point conversion failed on a fumble. Offensive statistics included 30 carries for 111 yards and 2 of 8 passing for 6 yards, 1 INT, and 1 dropped pass. The offense totaled 117 yards on 38 plays in which 11 plays. The Blue Devils went backwards more than 100 yards due to mistakes, fumbles, and penalties.
The defense had another terrific performance only giving up one touchdown in the game. That score (Cosby) was set up by a Blue Devil fumble inside the 15 yard line.
The Jr. Prep football team plays St. Anne's Belfield (STAB) at STAB on Wednesday, 27 September 2006. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm. Directions can be found under the Athletic section of the website.
Prep team plays host to Loyola-Blakefield today at 4:00pm. Come on out and watch!

LTC Nothnagle Goes Down Under
Ltc. Chris Nothnagle, Chair of Mathematics and Woodworking Sponsor, had the chance of a lifetime this summer to visit Austrailia on an education grant from the Ford Foundation. In his own words he describes his trip to the land down under and an article will also appear in next month's issue of the international publication, Wood of World.
My Trip to Australia, Ltc. Chris Nothnagle
This summer from August 26th through September 5th I had the golden opportunity to visit the land "Down Under" for an International Woodworking Convention in Toowomba, Queensland. I arrived two days early and toured the rain forest and visited Steve Irwin's Australian Zoo. The rain forest was filled with eucalyptus trees and spectacular views amidst the endless sounds of exotic birds that were very colorful. We hiked for 4 kilometers along the Bunya mountains and viewed the giant Bunya pine tree with trunk diameters up to 6 feet and growing to near 100 feet. The trail was laden with ferns and poisonous stinging trees with warning signs of trees and plants that we could not touch. Australia is full of dangerous snakes, and the like, so I was always careful of where I stepped.
The Australian Zoo was a whole day event that included a snake show, an exotic bird show, and a crocodile show that was educational and entertaining. There I got to pet kangaroos and see koalas for the first time.
At the Woodworking Convention about 85 participants from 5 countries exhibited and gave seminars concerning their craft. The detailed seminars were on Australian wood and tree identification. This information left me with an idea of how tough it is to identify the 800 species of Eucalyptus trees, not to mention the many Acacias and Ironbarks. There was great camaraderie among Society members as they shared tips to take home and investigate. The Convention had one exhibition day when the general public came to view all the Society members' work. There we recruited a dozen new members including the first Aborigine artist. On the last day of the convention, word was spread among the convention attendees of the death of Steve Irwin and great sorrow was shared by all at their beloved animal star.
With one additional day in my schedule, I visited a rural outback 360 acre fenced in farm in which we drove cattle from one end to the other separating calves to a high pasture. I watched my every step to avoid snakes or scorpions. The farm had one shack that carried no electricity or plumbing. Underneath the porch of the shack was an 8 foot long carpet snake. I observed wallabies (a smaller version of kangaroos) close by feeding on the little bit of green grass in an otherwise dry dustbowl area.
The memories I will carry with me a lifetime. Australia is a place that is unforgettable and it is definitely worth the 23 hours of flight time you have to endure to get there.

Officers Training at Fort Lee
Cadet officers had a little more than basic shoe shining and drill practice in store for them when they returned to campus the end of August for officers' training. For the past sixteen years, cadet officers have traveled to Fort Lee to endure three days of intense training. "The objective is to identify leadership qualities and capacities within cadets that have already shown some desire and potential for leadership and slot them into the 40-plus officer positions at the Academy," quotes Lt.Col. Al Ivens, Upper School Commandant.

Jr Prep Tackles Orange County High School
The Junior Prep football team played at Orange County High School on Thursday, September 7th. They were victorious 20 to 0 in their first showing of the season. The highlight of the game was the defense, which shut down Orange and managed to provide not one, but two interceptions for touchdowns. The offense looked good, which was anchored by the five men up front.
Congratulations to the Junior Preppers. The Prep team rolls up to the Philadelphia area today for a game Saturday against Valley Forge Military Academy. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:30 pm.
After starting the first play of the game with a turnover (fumble), the offense starting moving the ball down the field and 30 yards later on a run by Andy Tembon, the offense had put the Blue Devils up 6-0 and would not look back once again until the final horn blew. The Blue Devils' defense came out roaring that next series, which was topped off by Jonathan Witt's interception for a touchdown. The two point conversion failed and FUMA was now up 12-0. After moving the ball down a short field the offense stalled out once again inside the 20 yard line and that is how the first half ended. The 3rd quarter was dominated by the Orange offense until Andy Tembon made his second interception of the game to change the momentum and stall out Orange's success. At the end of the 3rd quarter, Anthony Williams returned another Orange interception into 6 points. The 2-point conversion was successful on a QB option by Jahmeal Quarles-Belt and ended FUMA's scoring for the night. The final score was 20-0 when the final horn blew.
Defensive Leaders:
Andy Tembon - 2 Interceptions
Anthony Williams - 1 Interception, TD
Jonathan Witt - 1 Interception, TD
