Hope for Humanity Project has Happy Ending
Over the past several months Fork Union Military Academy has been raising money for a 12 year old boy from Sudan, Abraham Mabeny. Abraham needs surgery to correct a birth defect of the heart. The money raised will assist in bringing him to the United States for this surgery. Even though this young man is across the globe, his relationship to FUMA is very close to home. Abraham is the younger brother of Gideon Mabeny, who came to Fork Union in January 2006 through the assistance of Hope for Humanity and a local scholarship donor.
Through the generosity of FUMA faculty, staff, cadets, and friends enough money was raised to help bring Abraham to the United States, along with Hope for Humanity and their partnership with International Hospital for Children. In a recent letter to Bev Hanlin, Community Service Coordinator at FUMA, Jennifer Ernst, a representative at Hope for Humanity, wrote the following:
My husband Darryl and I joined the Farley's at FUMA on Mother's Day for the outstanding Mother's Day Parade. We were so impressed, it was beautiful!
I have just received word that Abraham has been approved by the International Hospital for Children to come to the United States for his heart surgery! While we still have Visas to get approved and flight arrangements to be made, we at least have a commitment and know that he will be coming.
Thank you and Blessings,
Jennifer Ernst

19 in a Row! FUMA Wins State Track Championship
For the 19th year in a row, the FUMA Track & Field Team dominated the competition at the State Championship Meet held Saturday, May 20, 2006. Led by Brandon Caleb and Axel Mostrag, the team posted an astounding score of 166.50 points, with Woodberry Forest picking up second place with 78 points, and St. Christopher's grabbing third place with 76 points.
Brandon Caleb won both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdle events, as well as the long jump and triple jump. As if that were not enough for one competition, Caleb also ran in the 4x100 relay, helping the team pick up third place in that event.
The Blue Devil distance runners posted an impressive 1-2-3 victory, with Axel Mostrag, Jamie Reichlen, and Szymon Rola picking up 24 points for their first, second, and third place finishes, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Mostrag and Rola also finished first and second in the 1600-meter race. Jonathan Buckland and David Johnson both scored in the 3200-meter race with a second and sixth place finish. FUMA also picked up a win in the 4x400 relay run by Mostrag, Reichland, Rola, and Sylvester Bryce. Jamie Reichlen brought home third place in the 400-meters.
Dylan Greer and Mike Tumbarello both scored points in the pole vault with third and fifth place finishes. Jonathan Foote and Travis Myers placed second and eighth in the high jump. Jobari Abramson took third place in the triple jump. Tienne Jefferson placed fourth in the discus, and Carl Daniel finished just out of the points in the shot put with a ninth place finish. Steven Palmer placed fourth in the 100-meter dash and ran the anchor leg in the 4x100 relay with teammates Tyrone Gardner, Neal Dodson, and Brandon Caleb to win third place, just a quarter second behind the first place team and 1/100th of a second behind the second place finisher. Neal Dodson and Tyrone Gardner finished third and eighth in the 200-meter dash.

FUMA Alumnus Speaks at Greater Issues Forum
Dion Trahan, FUMA Class of 1998, became the second graduate to address the Fork Union Military Academy Greater Issues Forum when he spoke to members of the Cadet Corps and Academy community on May 16, 2006. Dion was the Brigade Commander during his senior year and since leaving FUMA has received an undergraduate degree from The Citadel and a law degree from LSU.
Also a member of the Louisiana National Guard, Dion served a combat tour as an armored platoon leader in Iraq.
In his message Dion focused on the impact FUMA has made, and continues to make, in his life. He continually emphasized that FUMA graduates depart the school with all the tools they will need for a successful life, and implored the cadets to take the values learned as members of the Corps and use them to become character-driven men who are strong enough to do what is right in what has become a troubled world. For photos from this event go to the photo gallery.

FUMA trailed most of the game, but overcame a 6 to 3 deficit to tie at 7 to 7 late in the fourth quarter. FUMA SCUBA Club
By: Cadet Matthew Whittaker
I really enjoyed the SCUBA program at FUMA. SCUBA diving has always interested me. I've wanted to get certified for the longest time, but never had the chance until this year. The classes consisted of three weekends. The first one was mainly classroom learning about how to dive and do it safely.

The next weekend we got to get our gear on and get in the pool. I had a really good time with just getting in the pool and getting to swim around underwater. The third weekend we packed the bus for our trip to Lake Rawlings for our final test. We stayed in cabins while at the lake which was nice because we had a hot shower and air conditioning. For the open water certification we had to complete four dives successfully. Each dive consisted of a few skills at the beginning and then ended with a 10-15 minute exploration dive in the lake. They had all sorts of cool things to see. There were two sunken school buses, cars, computers, fish and other stuff. Everyone said that the lake was going to be freezing but I was fine. The SCUBA instructors and Capt. Garriss were very knowledgeable and experienced. I enjoyed talking to them about different places that they went diving. The overall SCUBA program was excellent and I enjoyed it very much! It feels great to be a certified SCUBA diver!

Prep Baseball

Prep Baseball suffered a tough loss on Thursday, May 4th as they traveled to St. Christopher's in Richmond only to lose 6 to 0. Matt Smith gave FUMA a good chance to win, settling in after a rocky 3 run first inning for the Saints. There were not many highlights for Fork Union in either facet of the game, offense or defense, but Hunter Fairchild laid down a beautiful bunt that advanced the runner to second and put the runner on first in scoring position. Yet, the plague of strikeouts resurfaced for the Blue Devils as they failed to convert with runners in scoring position. Again, FUMA looks ahead for Friday's rematch against Trinity. Prep will finish the year with their toughest opponents, which include perennial champs STAB and again at home versus St. Christophers.

Last Thursday's game was another heart breaker for the young team. Although the boys played with fire and determination, it was not enough to overcome the shear size of the of the St. Chris Saints team. Our pitchers faced a lot of 3 ball counts, which led to a good deal of walks. It was the walks that hurt the team the most. The final score was 14 to 2. Our final home game is still scheduled against Collegiate at 4:30. The final game of the season will be Thursday at STAB at 4:00.

Justin struck out six Tiger batter, and Ron Berscak came in for mop up work in their bottom half of the seventh inning; striking out one. The bats were up and running in Chatham, VA as the Blue Devils overcame the long trek south and woke up after being down 3 to 2 in the 1st inning.
The Blue Devils were paced at the plate by big catcher Matt Riley's two doubles and a singl, Josh Brown's triple and single, Bryn Barham's double and single, and Kyle Andrew's double and single. Barham and Brown each scored two runs for the visiting team. The Blue Devils are in action again Friday May 5th at home vs. Woodbery Forest.

The Fuma baseball team was handed a demoralizing loss by the Fluvanna Flucos, 22 to 3. During the game, we had some problems being consistent from the mound with strikes. This problem was only compounded by a good amount of errors that were committed in the field. The mood after the game said it all about the team. But we hope not to let this keep us down and use it as a learning experience instead. We have a week to get back on the winning track before we face St. Chris on Thursday. Our game scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled with no make up date as of yet.

For the Second Year in a row, FUMA avenges a WFS loss
Prep Baseball's momentum train could not be stopped as they beat Woodberry Forest in a rematch game at their home field, 5 to 3 (the same score as last year's rematch game against WFS). Again, the Blue Devils broke out with an early lead. With the wind carrying the ball, Michael Walker homered (4) for the second game in a row, and Mike Crosby almost drove one over. Donny Outlaw had a good game at the plate as well. Michael Walker had much help from the FUMA defense in getting his win with Hunter Fairchild playing a great game at second and Judd Knibbe playing another flawless game this time at third. Prep is now 8 to 6 on the year and 6 to 5 in the prep league.
