FUMA SCUBA Club

By: Cadet Matthew Whittaker

I really enjoyed the SCUBA program at FUMA. SCUBA diving has always interested me. I've wanted to get certified for the longest time, but never had the chance until this year. The classes consisted of three weekends. The first one was mainly classroom learning about how to dive and do it safely.

The next weekend we got to get our gear on and get in the pool. I had a really good time with just getting in the pool and getting to swim around underwater. The third weekend we packed the bus for our trip to Lake Rawlings for our final test. We stayed in cabins while at the lake which was nice because we had a hot shower and air conditioning. For the open water certification we had to complete four dives successfully. Each dive consisted of a few skills at the beginning and then ended with a 10-15 minute exploration dive in the lake. They had all sorts of cool things to see. There were two sunken school buses, cars, computers, fish and other stuff. Everyone said that the lake was going to be freezing but I was fine. The SCUBA instructors and Capt. Garriss were very knowledgeable and experienced. I enjoyed talking to them about different places that they went diving. The overall SCUBA program was excellent and I enjoyed it very much! It feels great to be a certified SCUBA diver!
