Prep Baseball vs. Miller School

Prep Baseball made their bats presence yesterday at Miller School with a 14 to 5 win, scoring 5 runs in the first inning, hitting more aggressively then they have for the past week. Ryan Hedges had an early homerun that broke the game open and Hunter Fairchild, Donny Outlaw, Carl Daniel, Michael Walker, and Mike Crosby all had break-out games hitting. Michael Walker iced the cake with a solo late in the game, his third of the year. Matt Smith had another solid outing on the mound as he went 6 innings holding a well coached Miller team to five runs. FUMA hopes to carry this momentum into today's rematch at Woodberry Forest.

FUMA Lax vs. Tandem

FUMA's first game against Tandem Friends was a nail-biter concluding with a 9-8 loss. The rematch between the two teams Thursday April 27th proved to be as exciting. The score at the half was 6 to 3 with FUMA trailing. During the second half, the lead bounced back and forth, but FUMA led at the close of the third quarter 8 to 7.

With five minutes left in the game, a timely shot from the crease evened the score 9 to 9. Tandem bought time and was able to retake the lead with less than two minutes in the game. In the final seconds, long stick middie, James Gorman stole the ball and ran the length of the field. His shot bounced high off the post as time expired.

FUMA scores were credited to George Robinson (1), John McAfee (3), Jeffrey Newton (3), James Gorman (1), and Jordon Cavanaugh (1).

Varsity Baseball

Varsity Baseball continued their hitting drought in another loss, 5 to 0, to a strong Woodberry Forest team yesterday. Matt Smith pitched a flawless first two innings and was taken out to be saved for the 2 upcoming games this week. Wes Sherrill replaced him pitching well, but an overthrow error in the 5th inning eventually would cost FUMA a few runs, and impact our morale. Woodberry's Pitcher, Morris, threw a no-hitter striking out 15 batters. The overall defensive effort was strong for FUMA, so they look to keep that defensive momentum and awaken their bats this Thursday at Miller School and against Woodberry again on Friday.

Junior Prep - Third Consecutive Win

The FUMA Jr. Prep baseball won their third consecutive game Monday against Trinity 6 to 4. Justin Fregeau went four innings on the mound, only giving up four runs. Rob Berscak came in and retired 9 consecutive batters to close out 3 innings of perfectly pitched ball; not to mention the great defensive effort put forth behind him. The Blue Devils were led at the plate by Rob Shermer and John Malley's two singles, David Millhouse's single, and Justine Fregeau's single. Fregeau struck out one batter in his four innings of work, but a great effort for Justin as the FUMA defense struggled a little through some early inning errors behind him. All in all Justin got his second win of the year, and Berscak picked up his second save of the year. FUMA plays at Benedictine on Friday April 28th.

JV Lacrosse Wins, Prep Loses to Tidewater Opponents

The JV lax team competed against Christchurch for their second game on Thursday. Winning their first game at home, FUMA players expected to have to work for a second victory playing on Christchurch's home turf. Coming out sluggish, the first quarter ended with the Blue Devils trailing 3 to 0. Rallying, the team pushed back hard over the last three quarters, winning 6 to 3.

The Blue Devils prep lacrosse team experienced their fourth loss this season against the highly-ranked team of Norfolk Academy. FUMA fought hard, ending the first quarter respectably and trailing only by 2. The wet and exhausted defense, however, could not stop the constant assault of rain and skilled NA players. The game ended as dismal as the weather, 22 to 2.

Junior Prep vs. Christchurch

The FUMA Jr. Prep baseball won their second consecutive game at home vs. Christchurch. The seven inning affair went on for 3 1/2 hours due to taking time out to maintain the playing field by the FUMA ground-crew; heading by the FUMA coaching staff and Cadet Hubert.

After a 4 to 0 lead through four innings, the Blue Devils saw their lead taken away after a series of mishaps that lead to seven unearned runs by the visitors from Christ Church. After Ron Berscak scored the apparent winning run in the bottom half of the sixth inning, sophomore Rob Shermer closed his seven innings on the mound with the victory. Shermer struck out ten of the visiting teams' batters on the day. The Blue Devils were paced at the plate by Shermer's homerun, Josh Brown's triple, and singles by Kyle Andrews and Ron Berscak. FUMA plays at home Monday April 25th vs. Trinity Catholic.

Jr. Prep Baseball

The FUMA Jr. Prep baseball won an exciting game against Collegiate on a beautiful spring afternoon. The Blue Devils overcame many tough situations and battled a very good Collegiate team through 9 hard fought innings. Andrew Stout went the mandatory 7 innings only giving up four runs. After Collegiate broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 5th, the Blue Devils decided to give the home team some fireworks. The Blue Devils tied the game at four a piece in their top half of the seventh inning, and then put forth a tremendous display of team defense to shut out the Cougars in the bottom half of the seventh. With bases loaded and no-outs, all the Cougars needed was one run to win the game, but consecutive force outs at home allowed John Malley to toss the third out of the inning to Robert Shermer to end Collegiate's chances in the seventh.

The Blue Devils then scored a run in the 8th inning just to see Collegiate match them in the bottom half of the inning. After scoring one run in the top half of the 9th to make the score 6-5, the visiting team looked to their defense and Ron Berscak, on the mound, to seal their fate. Berscak faced the meat of the Cougars line-up, but the defense was set to back him up and back him up they did. FUMA set their three, four, and five hitters down 1-2-3. The Blue Devils were paced at the plate by Rob Shermer's triple and two singles, Justin Fregeau's two singles, and singles by Tanner Clements, Tyler Jackson, and Kyle Andrews. Bryn Barham scored two runs for the visiting Blue Devils as well. Andrew Stout pitched a very strong 7 innings for the win and Ron Berscak tossed two tough innings for the save. FUMA plays at home Friday April 21 vs. Christchurch.

FUMA Now Looks Forward After Tough Loss

Submitted by Cadet Eugene Connor

FUMA Prep Baseball subjected themselves to their worst played game yesterday with a 7 to 0 loss against Collegiate. The game was knotted at zeros until about the third inning when Collegiate's bats came alive against the hard-throwing Michael Walker, who took the loss for FUMA. The defense sputtered for the Blue Devils as the game continued, and the bats could never find the open spaces in the field with many hits going straight at the opposing players. Carl Daniel was one of the few that struck the ball well all game, and Hunter Fairchild laid down a mentionable bunt that almost sparked a FUMA rally. FUMA looks to put this behind them and get ready for a trip to Hargrave on Saturday.

Middle School Baseball

The young team played their hearts out yesterday, but in the end they were edged out by the kids of STAB. After two innings we found ourselves down 13 to 1. But in the third inning, we mounted a comeback; scoring 9 runs in the inning. This brought the game back into sight and raised the spirits of the team. But it just wasn't our day to win. We had a few unforced errors which led to a few more runs that we just could not make up deficit. As coach, I was very proud of the team at the end of game. Our next game is today against Collegiate at the Goochland field.

FUMA Prep Baseball Topples Trinity

The FUMA Prep Baseball team toppled another powerhouse prep league team last Thursday as they beat Trinity Episcopal 4 to 1. Matt Smith pitched a gem, striking out numerous batters including getting out of a jam in late innings with men in scoring position, striking out a batter with a 3&2 count. The bats came alive to make up for a few errors in the field with Donny Outlaw hitting his second home run of the season, as did Michael Walker. Trinity was undefeated in the prep league until Thursday's game. This win brought out FUMA's true potential and shines the light ahead for the state tournament.

Highlights of Gus Lacy Track Meet

Article courtesy of Brandon Miles at MileStat.com

Three state leading performances and four meet records were set in the 2006 edition of the Gus Lacy Track Classic as the select size of the meet was able to push the meet along quickly and with a little luck, avoid any impediments from inclement weather. Fork Union's Axel Mostrag, Prince Edward County's Deangelo Wilson, and E.C. Glass' Mike Zajac also set new meet marks with Mostrag and Zajac also posting state bests.

Fork Union junior Axel Mostrag competed in the 1600 meter run and broke a mark set by another Fork Union distance great in Kippy Keino, who now stars at Villanove University. Mostrag had some help in the race in the form of E.C. Glass senior Patterson Wilhelm as Wilhelm lead the Fork Union All-American through roughly 1100 meters. At the start of the homestretch heading into the bell, Mostrag seized the lead and then closed quickly on his final lap with a 59 second last 400 meters to finish in a personal best time of 4:14.71. His time bettered Keino's old meet record of 4:15.66 set in 2003. Wilhelm meanwhile held onto second after doing the hard early pace work for a time of 4:22.92. Group AA state champion Griff Graves was stuck in no man's land for much of the race to finish in third place at a time of 4:26.54.

The Fork Union boys were once again meet champions at another home invite. While they are friendly as meet hosts, they are not so accommodating in allowing any team to come in and take a team title from them at either the Gus Lacy Track Classic or the Fork Union Indoor Invitational. The boys from Fork Union were runaway winners on Saturday as they compiled a team score of 132 points to finish well ahead of Appomattox County with 74 points.

The 38 point difference between Appomattox County and Fork Union was created virtually alone by Brandon Caleb as he earned 40 individually with four first places finishes. Caleb cleaned up in the jumps and hurdles as he garnered wins in the long jump (22'1") and triple jump (44'5.50") despite a slick runway. He also finished ahead of the rest in the 110 (14.90) and 300 (41.32) meter hurdles as Appomattox County's TK Kelson was a second place finisher in both events to Caleb.

Iron man award of the day goes to Fork Union's Jamie Reichlen as he took second (51.64) to Albemarle's Christopher Best (51.38) in the 400 meter dash and then in a short time frame came back for another second place finish in the 800 meter run (2:01.48) as Forest Park's Zack Williams had an outstanding run to win the race in a time of 1:59.65. Reichlen was also a member of the winning 4x400 meter relay (3:32.28) to put the icing on the cake for Fork Union. Appomattox was led by the Kelso boys with Rashad scoring 18 points in the 100 and 200 meter dashes and TK picking up 16 points with his two runner-up performances in hurdles, but also had a first place finish in the 4x100 meter relay with a solid 43.29 clocking.

Albemarle's Anthony Bryant showed up late for the meet and it gave him little time to prepare for the high jump as it showed with him going out at a height of 6'2" as Fork Union's Jonathan Foote won the competition in an event named after his older brother and past Fork Union track athlete Bryon Foote with a successful clearance at 6'4".

Middle School Baseball

The baseball team suffered another heartbreaking loss yesterday to their prep-league rivals, the St. Chris Saints. The team was led on the field by the crafty pitching of Brandon Murphy and in the later innings, the hard throwing of Blake Jones and Mike Mathis. But the Saints were just too much to overcome. They opened the game with a 5 run first inning, which shook the foundations of our young pitcher. The young men played hard until the end but it just was not enough to overcome the early deficit. They handed the young Blue Devils a devastating loss 15 - 4. We will get two days worth of good practice in before our next game here against Prospect School Thursday at 4:30.

First Home-Runs of the Year

First Home-Runs of the Year contribute to two-game Christchurch rout

Fork Union Prep Baseball traveled to Christchurch School yesterday for their second double-header of the year in prep league play. They swept both games handily as the bats livened up for FUMA. Michael Walker pitched the first 5 inning game giving up only one unearned run on three hits. Donny Outlaw homered to left-center field to break it open and Christchurch would never recover. Matt Smith got his first prep league win in the second game giving up only two runs as FUMA drove in ten and routed Christchurch again. Mike Walker crushed a solo home run to deep left-center in the second game. Defense was solid throughout the game with Mike Walker, Hunter Fairchild, and Chance Dickerson making key plays. Andrew Stout made his debut in the 7th inning and Judd Knibbe played a flawless game at shortstop.

Middle School Baseball

The opening game of the season was far more exciting than any of us could anticipate. The guys played their hearts out. At the end of the first inning, we found ourselves down by two runs, which we promptly got back in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead. But after 5 and a half innings, we found ourselves down by 6 runs.

In the bottom of the last inning, we managed a comeback worthy of the pros scoring six runs in the inning, three of which came with two outs. This sent the game into extra innings. Fearing the game would be called due to darkness, I agreed with the opposing coach for each team to start their half of the inning with a runner on second. Again, we found ourselves down by two runs at the end of this inning, but we had not given up on the game. We started with our runner on second, who promptly stole third, and a first batter walk gave us runners at the corners. This is where the fun really began. Cadet Colonna comes through with a two run hit, which put him in scoring position for Cadet Spangler to drive him in with a game winning single. The final score was 11-12 in our favor. The guys played great, and I hope that the rest of the season is just as exciting as the first game.
