National Signing Day at Fork Union Military Academy
Fork Union, VA - Fork Union Military Academy will hold a special media event for National Signing Day on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at 2:30pm in the Thomas Gymasium on campus. The full Corps of Cadets will be assembled to honor this year's signees in this special ceremony. A number of FUMA athletes will be accepting scholarships to top football programs across the country, including some stories of special local interest:
* Brandon Caleb, a senior originally from Richmond, VA, is a nationally-ranked wide receiver prospect, currently ranked 17th in the nation. He has attended Fork Union Military Academy since the 8th grade. He was recruited by a large number of schools including Virginia, Virginia Tech, University of Southern California, and many more. He will be signing a commitment to attend the University of Oklahoma.
* Jamal Schulters, a senior who has attended FUMA for two years, will be signing his letter of intent to attend Kansas State University. Coach Ron Prince recently left his coaching position at the University of Virginia to take the head spot at Kansas State and Jamal is among his first recruits. Jamal is hopeful he'll see playing time early in his college career at running back and as a punt and kick returner. Jamal's older brother, Lance Schulters, is currently a defensive back with the NFL's Miami Dolphins. Jamal came to FUMA at the suggestion of Lance's former Tennessee Titans teammate Eddie George. Eddie George is a FUMA alumnus and one of FUMA's two former students to win college's coveted Heisman Trophy (the other being quarterback Vinny Testaverde).
* Two more seniors from FUMA's high school team are expected to sign tomorrow as well. Allen Young is expected to commit to the University of Charleston, and Carl Daniel weighing scholarship offers from Virginia Military Institute, University of Rhode Island, Furman University, and Hofstra.
In addition to these four seniors, a number of postgraduate students will be making college commitments tomorrow. Three signees of note:
* Brent Trice of Barboursville, Virginia is expected to commit to Vanderbilt. In his senior year at Orange County High School, Brent was named All-Group AA in Virginia. He played safety for Fork Union and led the team in sacks. In interviews, Coach John Shuman has said that Brent reminds him most of former UVa standout Darryl Blackstock (now with the Arizona Cardinals).
* Markus James and Troy Wilson will each be committing to Tulane University in New Orleans. It could be said that this is just the latest in FUMA's efforts to help rebuild New Orleans in many ways! In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, FUMA sent a team to help in recovery efforts and identify students needing a new school home. Several displaced students came to FUMA from the New Orleans area on full scholarship. In December, another team of volunteers from FUMA traveled to the gulf region to help in continuing recovery efforts. Now, FUMA is sending two outstanding football players to the region to help build the Tulane football program!
Fork Union Military Academy has a long history of producing outstanding student athletes. In addition to Heisman Trophy winners Eddie George and Vinny Testaverde, FUMA has seen more than 60 alumni join the National Football League, including nearly twenty current NFL players. Three FUMA alumni are on the current Arizona Cardinals roster alone. Other current NFL notables include Plaxico Burress, Ernest Wilford, Chris Perry, and Billy McMullen.
