High Stakes Showdown Yields Split for Varsity Basketball
Last weekend, FUMA hosted Notre Dame Academy of Boston, Massachusetts. This was a tough challenge, as Notre Dame was 19-0 coming in, having won all of their games in the National Prep Tip Off Showcase in Rhode Island as well as their regular schedule against the tough New England teams and other noted rivals such as Hargrave Military Academy.
In the first game, Notre Dame lived up to their reputation, leading most of the game. The Crusaders were ahead 51-33 at halftime and extended their lead to 26 points in the second half. But the FUMA cadets came storming back behind a tough defense along with a deliberate, patient offense. The Blue Devils cut the lead to 15 points then to 10. Finally FUMA went ahead with only minutes left in the game. The game was tied with 7 seconds on the clock when FUMA hit a three-pointer. Then a foul on the inbounds allowed FUMA to upset the nation's top-ranked prep team.
In the follow-up on Saturday, Notre Dame enacted revenge, winning 111- 70.
FUMA returns to action Monday at 4:00 against Lynchburg College in Lynchburg and at Roanoke College Thursday at 7:00.
