Cadet John Hight adds new title to his resume....Hero
Cadet John Hight, a senior at Fork Union Military Academy, completed an arduous three-hour swim through open ocean this past Sunday night to reach shore and call for help to rescue his two friends who remained with their capsized boat until pulled to safety by the US Coast Guard.
Hight's mother credits his swim team experience as a boy with teaching him the breast stroke and his discipline learned at FUMA with giving him the strength to accomplish his feat.
"I think a lot of his officer's training came in handy yesterday," Judy Hight said. "He had to focus to swim that far."

Coach Al Groh makes a recruiting visit to FUMA
Coach Al Groh, head football coach at the University of Virginia, traveled out to the campus of Fork Union Military Academy Monday morning to spend an hour-and-a-half visiting with Coach John Shuman and one of his top prospects, wide receiver Jacoby Ford, a player whom Coach Shuman has called "the fastest human being I've seen here in 25 years."
Coach Shuman told Doug Doughty of the Roanoke Times this past week that Ford "is probably our best prospect ever. Ever. We've just gone through four weeks of the hardest-hitting teams we play and this kid came out with 12 touchdowns - any and every way possible."
At a combine held at Fork Union this past May, Ford was clocked in the 40-yard dash at an astonishing 4.19 seconds. Generally speaking, a time of 4.3 seconds at the NFL combine will place a draft prospect in line for a first-round pick. There are legends of Deion Sanders running a 4.17 in high-tops as a freshman, and there have been other sub-4.2 times confirmed in recent years (New York Jets wide receiver Leveranues Coles comes to mind), but there is no doubt that Jacoby Ford is currently one of the fastest human beings on the planet - not just on the FUMA campus.
Ford comes to FUMA from Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida where he was a track champion as well as a football player. Ford captured victories in both the 100-yard and 200-yard dash at the FHSAA 2A State Championships.
His older brother, Davy Ford, was a running back at Florida State. While working out with the Dallas Cowboys last year, Davy Ford was advised by Cowboys' linebacker Dexter Coakley, a FUMA alum, to send his younger brother Jacoby to Fork Union for a postgraduate year. Thank you, Dexter!

Joe Erhmann Visit
By: Cadet Zachary Jones, 8th Grade
Joe Erhmann spoke to the Middle School faculty and cadets in the library on October 4 and had some really inspiring things to say to us. A former Baltimore Colts standout, he talked to us about what it means to be a man. The world's aspect of being a man is to push away from all others and to show no emotions.

Mr. Erhmann speaks with the Middle School
What he said to us is that being a man is to be able to say I love you. Men are not to shy away from everything, but to open up to people and not be so negative. Mr. Erhmann also talked to us about his life and how he lived life with the wrong aspect of a man. He had an influence on me because he let me know that it is alright to show emotions. That chapel service will have a positive influence on me for the rest of my life. I think that it would be a positive impact on the school if we had Mr. Erhmann come and visit us every year to talk the school. I would enjoy it if he were to come back and visit us again.

Civics Day on October 11, 2005
Fork Union Military Academy will be participating in Civics Day again this year with a number of organized activities being held on campus in Fork Union, VA. On Tuesday, October 11th visitors to the Academy will focus on state and local government and the electoral process.
Joyce Pace, Fluvanna County's local registrar will discuss the Virginia state and local electoral processes from 9:00 to 9:35 a.m. in the Beatty Library. She will also be available to register eligible voters.
Two candidates for the Fluvanna Board of Supervisors (Columbia District) will debate the issues from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. in the Beatty Library. The candidates are Chuck Wright and Marvin Moss. Bill Hitchcock, Head of the Social Studies Department at Fork Union, will moderate the debate. This should be a lively demonstration of the exchange of views on issues relevant to our area.
This year's guest speaker will be Senator Frank M. Ruff, Jr. (District 15). He will be speaking on civic responsibility in the Wicker Chapel at 10:15 a.m.
Following Senator's Ruff speech, from 11:00-11:45 a.m., a question and answer session will be held in the Beatty Library. The topics include state responsibilities entitled "A Day in the Life of a Virginia Senator."
During lunch periods (11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.) there will be two sessions when gubernatorial representatives will present their candidates' views on the issues. Students from the social studies department will assist with these forums.
In addition, tables will be set up in the Estes Dining Hall by each of the parties. Cadets are invited to come by during planning periods, lunch, or teachers may bring them at any time throughout the day. This will be an opportunity to register to vote, ask questions about candidates or the party. If the participants are as prepared as last year, tons of goodies, pastries, bumper stickers, etc. will be available. Another table will be set up to cast a vote for Governor and for Fluvanna Board of Supervisors.
Joshua Scott, from the Center for Politics, will conclude the day with an open forum at 6:30 p.m. in the Beatty Library in conjunction with FUMA's Payne Greater Issues Forum. He will present a computer analysis of the gubernatorial election process.
