Coach Al Groh makes a recruiting visit to FUMA

Coach Al Groh, head football coach at the University of Virginia, traveled out to the campus of Fork Union Military Academy Monday morning to spend an hour-and-a-half visiting with Coach John Shuman and one of his top prospects, wide receiver Jacoby Ford, a player whom Coach Shuman has called "the fastest human being I've seen here in 25 years."

Coach Shuman told Doug Doughty of the Roanoke Times this past week that Ford "is probably our best prospect ever. Ever. We've just gone through four weeks of the hardest-hitting teams we play and this kid came out with 12 touchdowns - any and every way possible."

At a combine held at Fork Union this past May, Ford was clocked in the 40-yard dash at an astonishing 4.19 seconds. Generally speaking, a time of 4.3 seconds at the NFL combine will place a draft prospect in line for a first-round pick. There are legends of Deion Sanders running a 4.17 in high-tops as a freshman, and there have been other sub-4.2 times confirmed in recent years (New York Jets wide receiver Leveranues Coles comes to mind), but there is no doubt that Jacoby Ford is currently one of the fastest human beings on the planet - not just on the FUMA campus.

Ford comes to FUMA from Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida where he was a track champion as well as a football player. Ford captured victories in both the 100-yard and 200-yard dash at the FHSAA 2A State Championships.

His older brother, Davy Ford, was a running back at Florida State. While working out with the Dallas Cowboys last year, Davy Ford was advised by Cowboys' linebacker Dexter Coakley, a FUMA alum, to send his younger brother Jacoby to Fork Union for a postgraduate year. Thank you, Dexter!
