FUMA Wins State Championship - 18 in a Row!
Fork Union's Track team capped off one of the school's most decorated seasons in dominating fashion Saturday by winning the State Championship for the eighteenth year in a row. Leading the way for the Blue Devil's was Brandon Caleb, who won four events in the meet and set a State record in the triple jump with a jump of 46 feet 4-1/4 inches. Caleb also won the long jump and both hurdle races. Caleb, soon to be a rising senior has now won nine State titles in his career at FUMA. For his efforts, Caleb was named the meet's M.V.P.
FUMA had a big day in the distance races as well. Sophomore Axel Mostrag was a double champion winning the 1600 and 800. In both races, Mostrag used a devastating kick to pull away from the opposition. Andrew Rademaker won the 3200 capping off a year of achievement. Rademker won the 3200 convincingly after placing third in the 1600. Rademaker was the Prep League Cross- Country Champion, Prep League Indoor Tack M.V.P. and Prep League 3200 champ in outdoor track. The State title was the last piece of the puzzle.
Perhaps the signature win for the Blue Devils was the 4x100. The team has struggled for much of the year and taken its share of lumps. Saturday's performance was nothing short of perfection. Will Jordan, Steve Palmer, Richard Flood and Jamal Schulters nailed every hand- off and won by nearly a second. So many on the team saved their best for last on Saturday. Ronn Spinner improved two feet in Shot Put and was the State runner-up. Tony Grimes eclipsed the 21-foot barrier in the Long Jump and was second to Brandon Caleb. Dominic Gregory was the 13th seed in the triple jump but added a foot and a half to his season's best and finished fourth in the event. Frank Walker failed to score at the Prep League but threw his best on Saturday by five feet and ended up fourth in the Discus. Jonathan Foote tied for fourth in the High Jump and completed a very consistent season. Mike Tumbarello tied for third in the Pole Vault and prevented Saint Christopher's from sweeping the event. Also scoring for the team were Seniors Tripp Todd (Shot Put), Mike Nowakowski, Larry Gibson (4x800), Will Crissy (400), Jamal Saunders (110HH). Underclassmen getting into the scoring column include: Andrew Baker and John Schoffstall (4x800), Jamal Schulters and Steve Palmer (100), Richard Flood (200) and Sylvester Bryce (4x400).
Mario Scott set the tone for the future on Saturday, the tenth grader placed in both the 400 and 200. Both events tend to be Senior dominated and Scott proved to be up to the task finishing fourth in both events. Scott then joined teammates Will Crissy, Axel Mostrag and Sylvester Bryce to earn the runner-up spot in the 4x400. The time for the quartet, 3:31.2, was the fastest of the season.
