Fort Defiance High School Wrestling Tournament
By Cadet Bryan Halfpap
Last week on December 10 through December 11, Fort Defiance held a wrestling tournament with 12 schools, most notably Fork Union Military Academy, Monticello High school, Potomac Falls High, and Broad Run High. FUMA wrestler Drew Davis placed third in the tournament.
When the weigh-in started for the tournament at 8:00, the auxiliary gym of Fort Defiance High was packed with mostly with 103-160 pound wrestlers. There were so many people and so few scales and officials that it took at least an hour to weigh everybody before they could start. Officials managing the scales checked fingernail lengths and facial hair. Two hours later the tournament began at 10:00.
Fork Union's lightweights were all defeated in the first round; Tim Brown and Bryan Halfpap were both sent to the mat with pins. FUMA forfeited the weight classes 119-130.
John Chae, however, won FUMA's first match on Friday with his match (135) against Ethan Emmons from New Kent. The next Day Chae Wrestled against Joe Harter from Broad Run and lost, sending him to the consolation rounds for competition for 3rd place. Chae then lost in his consolation rounds and did not place.
Another FUMA victory took place on Saturday when Bryant Barnes wrestled in his consolation matches and won twice. Unfortunately, just two matches away from placing third in his weight class; his opponent Currene from New Kent High school defeated Barnes.
Nate Rix won his first match against his opponent, but lost both of his consolation matches. Rix admitted that he had made mistake and commented: "I got sloppy", and that he should be "In better shape" as well. Rix is an enthusiastic athlete and I think that this is one person who will do well in future matches.
Robert Romeo lost his first match to his opponent, and was later eliminated from the tournament with a win and another loss in the consolation rounds. He told me about the match that he won, which showed skill on Romeo's part. Romeo said that his opponent from Monticello was "Taller and faster than me." Romeo went off on the whistle, going for a double leg takedown. He got two legs but couldn't bring the other wrestler down, so he let go, pushed him back and grabbed his wrist. Both of them fought for a while for hand control, and then they locked up in a headlock. Romeo then executed the "sagging head lock" which got him out of the headlock and took down his opponent. Romeo placed the opponents head under his armpit, flipped him over and pinned him.
Last but certainly not least is Drew Davis, who placed third in the tournament with a loss and three wins. The 3rd place match was an exciting match, perhaps the best of all of them. Drew took off at the whistle, locked heads and sprawled on his opponent when he tried to shoot on him. Drew spun on his back and got on top, scoring two points for a reversal. Both wrestlers went out of bounds and restarted with Drew's opponent on the bottom. The first period ended without scoring, and with Drew still on top of his opponent.
2nd Period: Drew gets a penalty as he tries to get back up on top of his opponent after getting flipped over, giving his opponent one point and a short break. They restart with drew on the top. Drew re-breaks down his opponent, getting on top trying to get a half in a long battle. Drew gets his opponent in the body scissors, but is thrown off twice. The period ends.
3rd period: Drew starts on the bottom, and his opponent makes a comeback, breaking Drew down and getting side to side with him. They roll around the mat until the Referee calls out of bounds and they restart, with drew back down again. The restart sees the opponent start to make his comeback. At first it's slow and there seems to be a stalemate, but then the opponent breaks drew down and gets Drews shoulder down for a near fall, scoring twice. The score is tied when the period ends and goes into overtime.
Overtime: Both wrestlers start out in neutral for overtime. Drew grabs a headlock, and then uses it to score a takedown and win the match!
Injuries in this tournament were Adamzic with a sprained shoulder and Bryan Halfpap with a bloody nose.
