FUMA 28, Collegiate 35
FUMA's prep football team fought hard and valiantly against a strong Collegiate team but came up short as defending champion Collegiate won 35-28.
The game started out shakily for the Blue Devils, with the Cougars putting up 21 unanswered points by the early second quarter. The Blue Devils went three-and-out on each possession in the first quarter, racking up less than twenty yards of total offense. On the sidelines, players were showing frustration with each other and pointing fingers. One of the FUMA coaches pointed to the scoreboard and said "There's still 36 minutes to play. Just relax. Everything's okay. Just relax and play the game."
The coaching advice seemed to work because FUMA stopped playing like they were afraid to lose and began to play like they were eager to win. FUMA rolled up 21 straight points and ended the half at 21-21, erasing what had seemed like an insurmountable Collegiate lead.
The second half started well for FUMA when Collegiate fumbled an outstanding kickoff by Stephen Wilson and FUMA came up with the ball. Tyrone Wilson ran for another FUMA touchdown to take the score to 28-21.
Collegiate's pass offense was relentless, however, and they quickly answered with a score of their own to tie the game at 28-28.
FUMA and Collegiate traded long drives that ended with turnovers and it seemed like the fight might become a stalemate. With less than four minutes to play in the game, Collegiate's quarterback Russell Wilson spotted an open receiver streaking toward the left sideline. FUMA players on the sideline watched, stunned, as the Cougar collected the pass with no Blue Devil within shouting distance and ran it in, making the score 35-28 in favor of Collegiate.
FUMA was unable to close the gap in the remaining three minutes and were forced to watch the Cougar quarterback take a knee to run out the final seconds on their season.
The Blue Devils finish at 8 and 3 on the season. Their losses in the regular season to St. Christopher's and Collegiate both came on scores made in the final seconds of the game. FUMA had the pleasure of avenging their loss to St. Chris by trouncing them 31-6 in last week's playoff game to get into the State Championship game. The painful losses to Collegiate must now wait until next year to be answered.
The coaches at FUMA can look ahead to next year with confidence and anticipation, noting that FUMA has a number of sophomores and juniors playing key roles on this team who should return next year -- not to mention the members of this year's undefeated junior prep team who are likely to move up in 2005.
It will still take some time for the sting of Saturday's loss to diminish, however. But as the days go on, FUMA's Blue Devils will be able to look back on a season of great achievement with tremendous pride.

Veterans Day Ceremony honors FUMA's fallen
The Cadet Corps of Fork Union Military Academy honored our nation's veterans with a beautiful and dramatic ceremony November 11, 2004 on the campus in Fork Union, Virginia.
As darkness fell, the entire corps formed up on Fraley Circle. The bugle sounded, the alumni cannon fired and the cadets began a solemn march to FUMA's Veterans Memorial on which are inscribed the names of FUMA alumni who gave their lives in the service and defense of our nation.
LTG John Jackson, President of FUMA, presented the Veterans Day Address honoring those who served and remembering those who had fallen. The names of those 52 alumni were read aloud and a moment of silence was observed. As the FUMA bagpipers played Amazing Grace, a wreath was placed at the memorial by members of the Lake Monticello Coast Guard Auxilliary and individual carnations were laid at the base of the memorial by veterans in attendance.
The FUMA Band played the familiar hymn "God of Our Fathers" and then were joined by the entire Cadet Corps in the singing of "Keep the Home Fires Burning." The Retan Rifles fired a 21-gun salute and the haunting strains of Echo Taps sounded across the campus, played by Cadets Donte Brown and Aleks Peterson from opposite sides of the memorial grounds.
Following the ceremony, cadet officers and guests attended a reception in the Estes Dining Hall.
A copy of the Veterans Day Ceremony program is posted and contains the names of those FUMA alumni whose names are inscribed on our Veterans Memorial. Photos of the ceremony are posted in our photo gallery.

FUMA's Prep Football Team Advances to the Playoffs.
By Cadet Matt Perry
The air was briskly cold last Saturday as the Fork Union Blue Devils triumphed over Valley Forge by a score of 24-8. By winning this game, the Blue Devils qualified for the playoffs for the 3rd straight year in a row. Valley Forge, a little overconfident, only brought about 24 people to the game, and the Blue Devils made them pay by scoring 21 points in the first half and confining Valley Forge to less than 5 first downs.
The FUMA offense dominated in the first half. Tyrone Wilson ran the first touchdown early in the first quarter after an excellent pass from Jenson to Caleb. Late in the first quarter Jenson threw a beautiful pass to Brandon Caleb again, who caught the ball with two guys on the coverage, and then proceeded to humiliate them in what was pretty much just a 40-yard dash. At the end of the first quarter, the Blue Devils had outscored Valley Forge 14-0. In the second quarter, with less than a minute left to go in the half, Larrin Webster made an amazing catch in the endzone, and after the extra point the score was twenty-one to nil. Fork Union slowed in the second half, only scoring once. They had gotten mighty close, but couldn't finish the deal, so field goal kicker, John Beamer, sent the ball through the uprights bringing the score now to 24-0.
The FUMA defense also played an excellent game, holding Valley Forge to only one touchdown, which came with only twenty-eight seconds to go in the 4th quarter. Valley Forge knocked on the goal line a couple other times, most memorable of which came late in the 3rd quarter, where Valley Forge was less than 10 yards away from the goal line, only to have the door slammed in their face by the crippling FUMA defensive line. Curtiss Powell played a great game, making several great sacks and recovering a fumble that was stripped from a Valley Forge player by Dante Robinson. FUMA's Seth Astwood and Larrin Webster also played good games getting a pick-off, and making several good tackles respectively.
Fork Union's victory last weekend puts FUMA in the playoffs, and Fork Union will face St. Christopher's this weekend, away, in Richmond. If you can, come out and enjoy the game...it's going to be glorious.

The Cowboy Hat Season.
By Cadet Matt Perry
Jr. Prep Football was victorious against Benedictine last Thursday, 36-8, in a contest that that put Fork Union on the top of the mountain where they will reside until next football season. The name of this mountain: "Undefeated Season."
The Fork Union offense was unstoppable. The offensive player of the game was Malik Banana, who scored his first two touchdowns of the year. On the first score, Banana caught a short pass and ran it into the end-zone, but on his second touch down, QB Paul Karas pitched the ball to Brehon Perry, on a reverse, handing it off to Mario Scott, who threw the ball to the uncovered, Banana. He ran the ball easily into the end-zone. Mario Scott would also shine, scoring two touchdowns. One TD was an 85-yard punt return. Also scoring was John Howard, who scored on a 60-yard run.
The FUMA defense was brutal. They held Benedictine to one touchdown and only 6 first downs the entire game. Jo Ho led the defense, sacking the quarterback several times, and causing a QB fumble. Notable defensive plays were orchestrated by Robert Shermer, and Brian "Zit" Zitterkopf - both with interceptions. This was one of the best games that the Fork Union Defense has played all year.
Now you might be asking yourself: "What is the Cowboy Hat Season?" Well, that is why I am here to tell you. At the beginning of the year, after the Fork Union Jr. Prep team defeated an opponent during a summer scrimmage, one of the team members asked Coach Jones, "What are you going to do if we go undefeated this year?" Coach Jones replied with, "Oh, I dunno, I'll buy you all cowboy hats or something." I don't if Coach Jones knew what he was getting into when he said this, but as soon as he said it, a murmur arose from the team. They all seemed to think that this would be a fitting reward. As each game went by, the Jr. Prep's dreams of cowboy hats were slowly becoming a reality. Finally, after defeating Collegiate, knowing they would have no trouble in defeating Benedictine, the Jr. Prep team partied like it was 1999. The only question that the Jr. Prep team had to ask themselves at the end of the year was, "What is my hat size?"
