FUMA's Prep Football Team Advances to the Playoffs.
By Cadet Matt Perry
The air was briskly cold last Saturday as the Fork Union Blue Devils triumphed over Valley Forge by a score of 24-8. By winning this game, the Blue Devils qualified for the playoffs for the 3rd straight year in a row. Valley Forge, a little overconfident, only brought about 24 people to the game, and the Blue Devils made them pay by scoring 21 points in the first half and confining Valley Forge to less than 5 first downs.
The FUMA offense dominated in the first half. Tyrone Wilson ran the first touchdown early in the first quarter after an excellent pass from Jenson to Caleb. Late in the first quarter Jenson threw a beautiful pass to Brandon Caleb again, who caught the ball with two guys on the coverage, and then proceeded to humiliate them in what was pretty much just a 40-yard dash. At the end of the first quarter, the Blue Devils had outscored Valley Forge 14-0. In the second quarter, with less than a minute left to go in the half, Larrin Webster made an amazing catch in the endzone, and after the extra point the score was twenty-one to nil. Fork Union slowed in the second half, only scoring once. They had gotten mighty close, but couldn't finish the deal, so field goal kicker, John Beamer, sent the ball through the uprights bringing the score now to 24-0.
The FUMA defense also played an excellent game, holding Valley Forge to only one touchdown, which came with only twenty-eight seconds to go in the 4th quarter. Valley Forge knocked on the goal line a couple other times, most memorable of which came late in the 3rd quarter, where Valley Forge was less than 10 yards away from the goal line, only to have the door slammed in their face by the crippling FUMA defensive line. Curtiss Powell played a great game, making several great sacks and recovering a fumble that was stripped from a Valley Forge player by Dante Robinson. FUMA's Seth Astwood and Larrin Webster also played good games getting a pick-off, and making several good tackles respectively.
Fork Union's victory last weekend puts FUMA in the playoffs, and Fork Union will face St. Christopher's this weekend, away, in Richmond. If you can, come out and enjoy the game...it's going to be glorious.
