JV Soccer plays season opener
By CDR Rob Paylor
The FUMA JV Soccer team opened its season by traveling to Virginia Episcopal School (VES) on Tuesday, September 21. The weather was absolutely beautiful in the wake of recent storms (hurricane Ivan) and the lads were ready for some competition.
The game was underway at 4:30 pm, and early on the Blue Devils had a chance to test their defensive skills as VES aggressively played offense. John Malley did an outstanding job in the goal position, fending off more than a few shots from VES, and holding them to just 1 goal scored. Some other standouts for the first half were Kyle Andrews, Scott Hall, Andrew Myers, and team captain Andrew Platt.
Head Coach Catherine Garcia adopted a strategy of "substitute often" and cycled our players through their positions early on. By the end of the first half, it was evident that VES was growing tired, and the Blue Devils (freshly rested) were beginning to pressure the VES defense.
As the second half got underway, the Blue Devils took the game to the other end of the field and dominated the offense. It was only the outstanding play of the VES goalie which kept the Blue Devils scoreless. Many players excelled during the second half: Bryant Barnes, Seth Baumgardner, Sean Brunnworth, Theo Esposito, Max Graham, Josh Kennedy, Cameron Green, Trevor Tuckey, and Drew Stout as goalie.
In the end, the Blue Devils came together as a team, played exceptionally well, and earned praise from the officials for their conduct and sportsmanship.
