Collegiate Tops FUMA 8-1
Just a day after poor weather drenched the Academy forcing a postponement, Collegiate's varsity soccer team rained shot after shot on the Blue Devils. In a match where Murphy’s Law seemed to be in full swing, the Prep Soccer team suffered its fourth straight loss 8-1. Walker Owen scored FUMA's only goal, well into the second half. The never-say-die Blue Devils face Blue Ridge at at FUMA on Tuesday Oct. 5.

Junior Prep Air Raid Unstoppable.
By Cadet Matt Perry
Is there any JV or Jr. Prep team out there that can contend with The FUMA Blue Devils? Every opponent, so far, has been SMASHED by an incomparable FUMA offense, and a hard-hitting defense. The Fork Union Jr. Prep team took on Episcopal High School Thursday, Sept. 23, in a game that left EHS running back home with a 44-6 loss.
FUMA received the ball first, allowing offensive all-star, Mario Scott, to set the tone. He did so, running the kickoff 80 yards back into the end zone for six. On the next possession, the dominating Fork Union D forced, then recovered, a fumble.
After 2 plays with no gain, quarterback Mike Geraghty arced a beautiful pass into the hands of Mario Scott, who took it into the end zone without a problem. After missing the extra point kick with the first TD, FUMA tried and made the 2-point conversion.
After the FUMA defense held the EHS offense scoreless, the Blue Devil offense again rambled down the field and scored with a run by Frank Walker. Episcopal finally got on the board at the end of the first quarter with a throw by the pressured QB. The score at the end of the first quarter was 20-6.
At the beginning of the second quarter, EHS stopped the FUMA offense, and were mounting an offensive comeback when Mario Scott came from nowhere with an amazing pick-off. He ran it back 35 yards for yet another touchdown. With 5:02 left in the half, Mario Scott scored yet again on an amazing drive where he "shaked and baked" the opposition so badly that one defender fell over. At the end of the half EHS walked into the shade with their heads low, while The Blue Devils trotted into the locker room, heads held high, and excited about what the second half might hold.
Episcopal High received in the second half, but before they could get a first down, #21, R.J. Hembrick, intercepted the ball and gave FUMA great field position. Michael Walker had one really large run, putting The Blue Devils on the doorstep of EHS's goal line. The next play was another run by Walker, who took it easily into the end zone. During the very next EHS possession, the bone-crunching FUMA defense forced a fumble, giving them great position once again. After a few short drives, #1 Braun, blazed 8 yards into the end zone for six. Episcopal, exhausted and demoralized, had had enough. They let the last few seconds run off the clock by running the ball and keeping in bounds. Final score Fork Union Military Academy: 44, Episcopal High School: 6.
Is there anyone who can stand up against this prodigiously talented Fork Union Jr. Prep team? Not this week, but maybe next week…

JV Soccer plays season opener
By CDR Rob Paylor
The FUMA JV Soccer team opened its season by traveling to Virginia Episcopal School (VES) on Tuesday, September 21. The weather was absolutely beautiful in the wake of recent storms (hurricane Ivan) and the lads were ready for some competition.
The game was underway at 4:30 pm, and early on the Blue Devils had a chance to test their defensive skills as VES aggressively played offense. John Malley did an outstanding job in the goal position, fending off more than a few shots from VES, and holding them to just 1 goal scored. Some other standouts for the first half were Kyle Andrews, Scott Hall, Andrew Myers, and team captain Andrew Platt.
Head Coach Catherine Garcia adopted a strategy of "substitute often" and cycled our players through their positions early on. By the end of the first half, it was evident that VES was growing tired, and the Blue Devils (freshly rested) were beginning to pressure the VES defense.
As the second half got underway, the Blue Devils took the game to the other end of the field and dominated the offense. It was only the outstanding play of the VES goalie which kept the Blue Devils scoreless. Many players excelled during the second half: Bryant Barnes, Seth Baumgardner, Sean Brunnworth, Theo Esposito, Max Graham, Josh Kennedy, Cameron Green, Trevor Tuckey, and Drew Stout as goalie.
In the end, the Blue Devils came together as a team, played exceptionally well, and earned praise from the officials for their conduct and sportsmanship.

FUMA Prep Soccer comes up short against VES
Fork Union's Prep soccer continues to improve their game. In a match that was much closer than the score implies, the Blue Devils came up short against VES (4-1) losing 4 to 1. The Blue Devils scored the first goal of the game well into the first half on a solo shot by sophomore forward Eddie Golden. VES answered with 2 scores near the end of the first half. VES' other two goals came in the second half, one a result of a penalty called inside the 18. FUMA travels to Richmond next Tuesday to take on Collegiate School. Kickoff is at 4 pm.

Prep Soccer vs. Norfolk Academy
By MAJ Steve Macek
The Blue Devils traveled to Norfolk VA to take on Top-Ranked Norfolk Academy on Friday September 17th. Battling the number one team is generally a tough ordeal. Mix in the winds of a former hurricane, and you have a unique gaming experience. FUMA stayed in the game early on, but succumbed to a powerful front-line attack. The result was a 6-0 loss. Next up: VES in the first home game of the season.

Jr. Prep pounds Hargrave
By Cadet Matt Perry
Junior Prep took on Hargrave Military School yesterday, Thursday September 16, in a 41-0 blowout.
In the first quarter the Blue Devils shocked Hargrave with a tremendous offensive assault, scoring 21 points in the first quarter. Drive after drive, FUMA made Hargrave pay for challenging them on their home turf. The First TD was scored in the first 15 seconds of the game when Cadet Howard ran the kickoff back 75 yards and into the end zone.
On the drive after that Michael Garrity threw an amazing pass to Mario Scott who burned the opposition and ran it into the end zone uncontested. Two more touchdowns were scored before the half by Michael Walker and Frank Walker, who both ran them in, making the score at the half, 28-0. The Hargrave team looked demoralized, as if someone had robbed them.
The second half was "everybody gets playing time" for the Fork Union Team, and "oh no, we have to go out there again" for the Hargrave team. Cadet Braun scored a FUMA touchdown in the second half, bringing the score to 35-0. Cody Wright added another touchdown late in the fourth quarter, putting FUMA ahead 41-0. On Hargrave's final drive, it looked as though they might score a TD, but their hopes were shattered when #17 Cadet Shermer intercepted the ball on the goal line with seconds to go. The final score FUMA 41, Hargrave 0.

Prep Football defeats Heritage
Cadet Stephen Wilson contributes this report
On Friday, September 10, the prep football team had a strong showing, defeating Heritage High School 38-22. Fork Union came to play! The hits made by the Fork Union Blue Devils could be heard in the stands.
Headhunters on defense such as Curtis Powell, Dante Robinson, and Stephen Palmer made endless bone-crushing tackles. Heritage star player, number 8, became timid running to the Fork Union line. The defensive secondary of Fork Union shut down any hope Heritage had of completing any passes.
"The defense played nothing less than a spectacular game," Cadet Stephen Wilson stated after the game Friday night.
The offense also had an incredible game. Tyrone Wilson scored within seconds of the game starting. Then Brandon Caleb had an outstanding catch across the middle in which he scored in the second quarter. But none of this could have been accomplished without the outstanding performance by the linemen. Sam Ham stated, "Even though we did not have all of our guys there, we still got the job done!" Brandon Caleb added, "The offense played great but there is still more room for improvement."
Tyrone Wilson rushed for 229 yards on 12 carries for three touchdowns.
This year the Fork Union prep team stands out above any team I have ever played with. It is because we are a family. We take care of each other on and off the field. I am amazed at how through the good and the bad times our team turns to God for help. I consider it an honor to be a part of this team. To God be the glory!

Prep Soccer outscored in "shot-fest"
The Blue Devils traveled to Christchurch for a battle by the waters of the Rappahannock. In a score more reminiscent of a football game, FUMA was outscored 12 to 6 in a shot-fest. 4 different Blue Devils found the back of the net. Seong Jang, Sean Smith and Brent Oberholzer each made one goal. Walker Owen's hat trick filled completed the effort. Although the team did not come out on top, the effort and drive was obvious. FUMA's next game is at Norfolk Academy on Friday with a 4:30 kick-off.

FUMA Prep romps over Heritage
By Cadet Matt Perry
There was a cool breeze blowing over the press box last Friday night as the Fork Union Blue Devils took the field. They would be squaring off against the Heritage High School "Pride". Coming off a 14-0 win against Paul VI last Friday, the Blue Devils were feeling confident, and there was a familiar smell in the air...Victory. Fork Union won the toss, and was set to receive.
The Blue Devil's first possession would set the tone for the entire game. They hit the ground running, with Tyrone Wilson leading the way, rushing for about 50 yards on the first play, and then running it into the end zone for a Fork Union touchdown. Heritage High School, wanting to prove that they were contenders, fired back with a long passing/rushing drive down the field, but the stone wall defense of the Blue Devils held them to just a field goal. In the second quarter FUMA had possession and with a hard sack their quarterback, Richard Jenson, fumbled the ball and the Heritage Pride recovered. FUMA, fired up, was not about to let them keep the ball. After a couple Heritage first downs, the defense comes out of nowhere with a huge interception, giving FUMA the ball back. During FUMA's next offensive drive Jenson completed a long pass to Brandon Caleb, who burned the opposition, running it in for an easy TD. FUMA went on to score several more times, and by the 4th quarter the score was lopsided in FUMA’s favor. Heritage had two touchdowns in the 4th quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the Fork Union Blue Devils this night. FUMA wins.
Defensive Player of the Game
Curtis Powell
Offensive Player of the Game

Jr. Prep Football team defeats Orange 27-13
By Cadet Matt Perry
With a 2 o'clock kickoff, The Junior Prep FUMA Blue Devils were set to square off against the Orange County High School Hornets. The Hornets were set to receive, and on their first drive, Mario Scott intercepts the ball, putting the Blue Devils on their own 38 Yard line. The Hornets never saw it coming.
The Fork Union Blue Devils had conjured a new type of offense that was unfamiliar to previous in the FUMA football program. It would be eloquently dubbed, "Air FUMA". On the first play FUMA would take the lead with a long pass to Mario Scott, who ran it in for a big TD. The air raid would not stop there. Scott would go on to score again with a similar play to the first, giving the Blue Devils a 14-0 lead going into the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd, number 25, Brandt Walker, rushes for a huge gain giving FUMA good field position, and making it easy for Michael Walker to run it in for a TD on the next play. Before the half, David Ware-Williams made an amazing catch, and then proceeded to break tackle after tackle in an amazing feat of strength. On the next play Howard made an easy catch, and ran it into the end zone uncontested.
Toward the end of the 3rd quarter, with a series of goal line pushes, preceded by a long offensive drive, the Hornets get on the board with 7. The Hornets struck again in the 4th, but it was too little, too late. The Game ended in a Blue Devil Victory with a final score of 27-13.
Offensive Player of the Game
Mario Scott - 2 touch downs, 1 interception.
Defensive Player of the Game
Jo Ho - 6 Tackles, 3 sacks.

FUMA plans Civic Responsibility Day for September 16
On Thursday, 16 September 2004, FUMA cadets will participate in a campus-wide civics event to promote political awareness and civic responsibility, to stimulate interest, and to educate students on the voting process.
The events are voluntary and will involve forums, discussions, the registration of eligible voters, a mock election, and a special speaker during chapel.
Representatives from both political parties will be located at tables in the dining facility. Cadets are encouraged to visit each table to learn about each candidate during the cadets' planning period. It is at this time that eligible voters may register to vote. Afterwards, the cadet may cast his "mock" vote for the candidate of choice at a third table.
At 1015 all cadets will report to chapel to hear from LTC Jones and a special speaker on civic responsibility.
Throughout the day (0900-1015 & 1100-1315), representatives from both parties will be available to visit classrooms to provide information on the voting process and presidential candidates. Interested teachers should contact CPT Eldridge to coordinate time of visit. Simultaneously, all Social Studies students will be in the library participating in forum/discussions about the political process, Electoral College, the candidates, and a question & answer session.
