Service through Rachel's Challenge

The Rachel's Challenge team from Fork Union Military Academy

The Rachel’s Challenge Team has been actively pursuing community service opportunities since late fall. The members initially wanted to focus on the FUMA community so they developed a mentoring program for cadets who enrolled in January, February and April. These cadets do not have the benefit of the extensive orientation that August entrants do. It was felt that they would benefit from a cadet mentor, who is not one of their superiors, to help them “learn the ropes,” and provide any needed assistance as they adjust to life at FUMA.

Fork Union Military Academy Summer School Director as the Tysons kiosk this weekend

MAJ John DeVault, our Director of Summer School at Fork Union Military Academy will be at the kiosk at Tysons Corner Center this weekend. John is also a guidance director and high school basketball coach at FUMA. MAJ DeVault is a great resource for information about both the summer and regular sessions.

FUMA's 11th first round NFL draft pick: Kareem Jackson

With the 20th overall pick in the first round of the NFL draft, the Houston Texans selected FUMA alum Kareem Jackson. Jackson came to Fork Union Military Academy to play for Coach John Shuman and was converted from a running back to cornerback. He went on to play his college football at the University of Alabama for Coach Nick Saban. After winning the national championship with Alabama this past season, Kareem Jackson announced for the draft and began rising rapidly up the draft boards.

Cadets Learn to Establish and Practice SAFE Internet and Email Habits

Cadets at Fork Union Military Academy learn safe internet and email habits from Peter Christensen.

By: Cadet Greyson Mann, Cadet Dan Kusnyer, Cadet Yongchul Lee

On March 26, Mr. Peter H. Christensen, Senior Principal Staff for the MITRE Corporation visited Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA). He gave a lecture about malicious software and Internet security to the FUMA cadets enrolled in the PVCC Dual-enrollment Information Literacy course. Professor Burkhart invited Mr. Christensen to the class because she believed that it would be very helpful for students to hear about security issues from someone currently working in that field.  Mr. Christensen used PowerPoint slides to present up-to-date information clearly and efficiently.

FUMA Cadet Blake Sundel has letter to the editor published

Cadet Blake Sundel, a member of COL William Hitchcock's Political Science class, had his Letter to the Editor of the Richmond Times Dispatch published prominently in the April 10, 2010 edition of the paper.

COL Hitchcock has long encouraged his students to articulate their opinions and offers extra credit and recognition for students who write letters worthy of publication.

Chapel message, 4/8/10

The chapel message on Thursday focused on the valuable leadership lesson found in 2 Timothy 4:2. In this verse, Paul encourages Timothy to use correction, rebuking, and encouragement with others.

Chapel message, 4/6/10

This morning's chapel message centered around the word "commitment." With the concept of commitment being seemingly abused by people today in their personal and professional lives, I reminded the cadets of Jesus' words in Matthew 28:19-20, where He promised to be with us until the end of the age. The idea that God is committed to us should offer reassurance and comfort at all times in our lives.

FUMA Alums named to VaTech All-Decade Team

This past month, TechSideline.com released their All-Decade Offense team for Virginia Tech football and it was no surprise to see Fork Union Military Academy alumni well-represented on this list of the best.

On the First Team were listed Josh Morgan (WR) and Jimmy Martin (OT). Named to the Second Team were Ernest Wilford (WR), Dave Kadela (OT), and Ryan Shuman (C).

Blood Drive coming to FUMA on April 24th

The American Red Cross and Virginia Blood Services conduct annual blood drives at Fork Union Military Academy. Cadets who are at least 17 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood. These agencies continue to have an urgent need for blood products and are seeking potential donors.

Parents can download and sign the Blood Drive Permission Form located in our Download Center to give consent for their cadet to participate as a blood donor.
