Chapel message, 2/25/10

Today's chapel message centered on our responsibility as Christians to go out and do for others, in Christ's name. We are called to preach the message of the gospel, first through our actions and then through our words. The scripture referenced was Exodus 3:7-10.

FUMA trombonist, Cadet Adam Elliott, selected to perform at Carnegie Hall

Cadet Adam Elliott, a junior at Fork Union Military Academy, has been selected for the 2010 American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. He will be a part of the Honors Band as a trombonist. Participation in the Honors Orchestra, Honors Band, and Honors Choir is limited to the highest rated high school performers from across North America.

FUMA's Prep Basketball takes VPL Championship

The Fork Union Prep Basketball Team defeated Woodberry Forest on Saturday, February 20th , to win the school’s first Virginia Prep League Championship in the league’s 38 year history. A strong defensive effort in the second half secured victory for the Blue Devils with a final score of 60-44. The team was led by tournament MVP Joe Branch (Raleigh, NC) who averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds for the three game tournament.
 

Phonathon to begin February 23rd

Fork Union Military Academy's annual fundraising Phonathon will begin on Tuesday, February 23rd. A team of 24 cadets will call on alumni, friends and parents of the Academy over the next two weeks to raise money for annual giving and ongoing capital projects, including the new barracks.

FUMA wrestlers head to Nationals

FUMA had only ten wrestlers competing in the this past weekend's State Championship, but six of those wrestlers placed in the top ten in their weight classes, and three FUMA wrestlers qualified to move on to compete at Nationals. Nationals will be held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA on Friday, February 26 and Saturday, February 27.

Cadet James placed 3rd at 119 lbs.

Cadet Barker placed 4th at 125 lbs.

FUMA Orienteering competes at Sycamore Scramble

The FUMA Orienteering Team competed at the Sycamore Scramble, a two day event in Raleigh, NC. Senior Co-Captain Adam Welsh placed 3rd on a collegiate level course. Cannon McIlnay took 2nd on the high school advanced level course. At the intermediate level, freshman Kevin McCartney and senior, Brian Coenen, got to the medal stand in their categories.
 

FUMA Swimming & Diving - 2010 Virginia State Champions

One week after winning the 2010 Virginia Prep League Conference Championship, Fork Union Military Academy Swimming and Diving made history on February 20th by winning their first Virginia State Championship in the 30 year history of the competition.  In the process, the Blue Devils set another two State Records (200 Yard Medley Relay – T. Romanini, B. Sundel, J. Gebert, J. Humphrey; and 200 Yard Individual Medley – T.

Indoor Track reclaims Prep League Title

Fork Union Military Academy’s Indoor Track team reclaimed the Prep League Title at the Estes Center on Saturday. After a year hiatus, the track team has returned to winning ways with an undefeated season. FUMA hosted the meet for the first time since 2004. The title was the fifth in six years. A week earlier the Blue Devils captured the VISAA Indoor title at Saint Christopher’s School.
 

FUMA athletics on a championship roll this weekend!

For the first time in recent history, FUMA's prep basketball team has won the Virginia Prep League Championship, defeating Woodberry Forest Saturday afternoon by a score of 60-44.

FUMA's indoor track team also won the Prep League Championship today, having already secured the State Championship this past weekend.

And the good news doesn't end there. FUMA's swimming and diving team is currently competing in the State Championships, expected to conclude later this evening. At the time of this writing, FUMA was in first place.

Director of Financial Aid at the kiosk this weekend 2/20-2/21

LTC. Todd Giszack, our Director of Financial Aid, will be at the kiosk this weekend. Todd, who is also Assistant to the President, spent several years teaching chemistry and coaching cross country and track before moving into administration.

If you wold like information about our summer or regular school year programs, please stop by on Saturday or Sunday. The Tysons Corner Center kiosk is located inside the mall on the second floor, just outside of Macy's main entrance.

Swimming World to cover VSIS Championships

For those who can’t make the VSIS competition on February 19-20 in Manassas, VA, Swimming World Magazine will be broadcasting the 2010 Virginia Independent Schools Swimming Championships on their website: www.swimmingworld.tv.
