Elizabeth Liles from Development, and Valerie Huff from our Admissions staff will be at the kiosk Saturday and Sunday this week. If you are interested in enrolling your son at FUMA, please stop by and ask for an application and information packet. The school year officially begins with the start of classes this coming Friday! If you would like to visit the campus, please call 434.842.4205 and we will be happy to set up a visit. The kiosk is located on the second floor of Tysons Corner Center, just outside of the Macy's 2nd floor entrance.
Please remember that this case study is offered in three parts- chapters 1-3. This is Chapter 2. If you haven't yet read chapter 1, please do so before proceeding. This chapter is entitled- "Why FUMA?" So you're faced with this dilemma that won't go away by itself. In fact, left unchecked it will only get worse. What can you do about your son's school struggles? When all the cards are on the table, both you and he recognize that his freshman year left much to be desired, and neither of you are satisfied.
Dr. Bob Grant, our Director of Guidance, will be at the Tyson's Corner kiosk (2nd floor outside of Macy's) this weekend. Dr. Grant is a great source of information about the One Subject Plan and its benefits for cadets in our upper school program. In addition to his position on our staff, Dr. Grant is also a former "FUMA parent" and can talk with you about the Fork Union from a "dad's" perspective. It is not too late to enroll in our fall session, but time is running out. Classes begin on September 4th!
REPORTING DAYS HAVE BEGUN!! Among the items coming to campus with cadets, we'd like to see a lot of de-activated cell phones, pagers and PDA's. As you may recall FUMA is an official collection site for the cell phones for soldiers project. Each donated, de-activated phones buys one hour of pre-paid phone time for a service member stationed overseas, usually in the Middle East or Korea.
Fork Union Military Academy and the "Lost Boys of the Sudan" make headlines again as the school prepares for another academic year. A recent article in the Fluvanna Review covers the story of The Lomong brothers, Peter (13) and and Alex (11). With the help of FUMA scholarships and the kindness of Coach Winston Brown and his wife Beth, these two young men have an educational opportunity they would have never dreamed of in their homeland of Sudan. For the full story, click here.
Prep football checks in this Sunday. If you are planning on attending FUMA, please make sure to have an up-to-date physical and completed health forms when you arrive. Information regarding football, including required forms, can be found in our download center by following this link. Please note that the check in beings at 8am in the Estes Dining Hall.
MAJ Mike Williams, Assistant Director of Admissions and coach of our power lifting team, will be at the Kiosk across from Macy's 2nd floor entrance this weekend. In addition to admissions, MAJ Williams has taught history and coached PG football at FUMA. Please stop by to speak with MAJ Williams and inquire about Fall enrollment.
FUMA is preparing a taste-tempting cookbook featuring favorite recipes from our alumni, parents and staff. Our cookbook will be beautifully illustrated and bound and is sure to be treasured for years. We would like you to submit 2 or 3 of your favorite recipes so you can be represented in our memorable collection. Your name will be printed with each of your recipes. Go to the For Parents page of the website for more information or contact Jana Vaughan at vaughanj@fuma.org. Deadline for submission is July 31st.
This summer has gone by so very quickly. Here it is August, and school will be resuming soon. I have to admit, FUMA just isn't FUMA without our boys, so we are really looking forward to seeing our returning students and welcoming new ones. This year we will welcome international students from United Arab Emirates, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Mexico, Iceland, Canada, and Ireland, just to name a few. We have an exciting year planned!
Ms. Yonce, our head nurse, will be in the Tyson's Kiosk this weekend. She had two boys attend FUMA and can offer a unique perspective to anyone who would like a "mom's point of view." The Kiosk is located on the 2nd floor outside of Macy's main entrance. If you are in the mall this weekend, please stop by and say hello. Our classes begin on September 4th, but it is not too late to apply.
Our Middle School Headmaster, LTC Rob Feathers, and I will be in Roanoke this Saturday for an Admissions Fair. This is a great opportunity to learn about FUMA. Feel free to stop by and speak with us and pick up information about applying to FUMA. Saturday, August 8, 2009 - 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Courtyard Roanoke Airport 3301 Ordway Drive Roanoke, Virginia 24017
Greetings! I hope that this entry finds you and your family enjoying the summer. I find it hard to believe that it is almost over. The school year is right around the corner, so I thought I would touch base with a few things to make sure that the opening day runs as smoothly as possible.
