Following the evening of June 18th, sports writer Jerry Ratcliffe did an outstanding job of covering the events surrounding FUMA's 2009 Sports Hall of Fame banquet in Fork Union, VA. In Saturday's morning edition of the Daily Progress, his account of Shammond Williams' acceptance speech captured the true mission of what Fork Union Military Academy means to these talented athletes. Greetings! I hope all of our cadets are enjoying their summer break. I trust that they are all cleaning their rooms each morning and making their beds. I further trust that they are responding to their parents as "Sir" and "Ma'am", as the situation dictates. I am enjoying some peace and quiet here in the office. I find that I can actually enjoy a couple cups of coffee and can read the newspaper from front to back before jumping into my work. I have wrapped up most of the paperwork from this past year and am beginning preparations for the coming year.
July 5 (Opening day of Summer School) will soon be here. The staff and faculty are ready for a very successful Summer Session. We will be welcoming international students from China, Thailand, Mongolia, Vietnam and Mexico. We are currently taking applications, so you still have time to join us at FUMA! Students in the ESL program will follow the same class schedule as other summer session students. The course will use an ESL textbook, include classroom instruction, and provide a heavy component on cultural immersion.
It's hard to believe the summer session is less than a week away. Some classes are starting to fill up already, so get your info in ASAP. As always, if you have any questions just give me a call.
Since the inaugural event in the summer of 1996, the induction ceremonies for FUMA's Sports Hall of Fame have always been star-studded affairs. From the hometown heroes who have captured our hearts with their winning ways, to the international superstars who have competed on the world's largest stages for major championships and Olympic gold, those honored by the FUMA Sports Hall of Fame have always made headline news. It will be no different this summer when our four newest inductees mount the stage to receive their honors and accolades.
Kevin Laue, the one-armed basketball prospect who played for Coach Fletcher Arritt's postgraduate basketball program this year, has committed to play basketball for Manhattan College, a Division I school in the MAAC conference, this coming year. Laue received three Division I scholarship offers, including offers from Wofford and Colgate University. Laue committed this past week to Manhattan.

Fork Union Military Academy announces that Merrill Robertson has accepted the school's invitation to serve as Master of Ceremonies for the FUMA Sports Hall of Fame Induction banquet on June 18, 2009. Being inducted into the FUMA Sports Hall of Fame will be Vinny Testaverde, Roman Oben, Shammond Williams, and Coach "Red" Pulliam.
The purpose of FUMA's Tuition Assistance Program is to help Cadet families afford the enrollment experience. Over the past several years the Academy has seen a substantial increase not only in the number of financial aid applications submitted, but also in the quantity of tuition assistance grants offered to our Cadets. The 2008-2009 academic session broke all previous records, and it appears that the upcoming 2009-2010 school year set yet another standard. So how does the process work? It all begins with an application for tuition assistance.
For most families, enrolling a son at Fork Union Military Academy requires serious financial planning. If you're taking a look at the Academy and think that perhaps your son could benefit from being part of our Corp of Cadets, you may be surprised at just how affordable the experience can actually be. Like all of the 82 member schools accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA)is a non-profit organization. Put simply- that means that our goal here is not to make money- but to make a difference in the lives of the boys who wear our uniform.
