Math Instructor and Football/Track Coach at the Kiosk this weekend

CPT Steve McCoy will be at the kiosk (outside of Macy's on the 2nd floor) this weekend. Coach McCoy works with the football and track programs and teaches math in our upper school. Our Summer entry point is around the corner and now is an ideal time to look at enrolling your son for our summer session or next fall. Please stop by and say hello.

Cadets Write Letters to the Editor

Every year LTC Bill Hitchcock encourages his students to submit Letters to the Editor of local newspapers to comment on newsworthy issues. During the 2008-2009 school year, thirteen students in LTC Hitchcock's U.S. Government, Political Science and International Relations classes were successful in getting published. As a matter of fact, four of these students, Haden Yonce, Cody Watson, Ben Wood and Justin Moore, were selected "Correspondent of the Day" in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Another student, Ron Berscak, had two of his submissions published.

Admissions at Tyson's Corner this weekend

MAJ Mike Williams, Assistant Director of Admissions and coach of our power lifting team, will be at the Kiosk across from Macy's 2nd floor entrance this weekend. In addition to admissions, MAJ Williams has taught history and coached PG football at FUMA. Please stop by to speak with MAJ Williams and inquire about either our Summer Session or Fall enrollment.

Summer Session

Please don't forget to ask about our summer session when you stop by the kiosk. We are accepting applications for enrollment and the session runs from July 5th to August 1st this year. It is a great way for your son to "get ahead" or "catch up" on their courses.

FUMA Power Team Sets 13 State Records

On Saturday, 3 cadets and 1 staff member competed in the 100% Raw Masters Nationals Powerlifting Meet just up the road in Zion Crossroads. Cadets Sequan Swint and Yaqub Abdur-Rahman have competed previously at the AAU Nationals meet. Cadet Abram Pastore, on the other hand, was a newcomer to competition. In spite of this, he was able to deadlift a whopping 209% of his bodyweight while establishing 4 state records in a relatively young organization along the way. Our 2 more experienced lifters enjoyed big days as well.

Honors Spanish students visit Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Honors Spanish III and IV students, accompanied by their instructors LTC Ed Moore and Mrs. Rebecca Smith, had the opportunity to survey Hispanic Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, VA on Wednesday, May 6, as an extension of their recent studies. Ms. Nycle Prada-Myers, docent from the VMFA, led the tour speaking exclusively in Spanish.

Director of Guidance at Tyson's Corner Mother's Day Weekend

Dr. Bob Grant, our Director of Guidance, will be at the Tyson's Corner kiosk (2nd floor outside of Macy's) this weekend. Dr. Grant is a great source of information about the One Subject Plan and its benefits for cadets in our upper school program. In addition to his position on our staff, Dr. Grant is also a former "FUMA parent" and can talk with you about the Fork Union from a "dad's" perspective. Dr. Grant wrote an interesting article regarding military school.

Swine Flu (H1N1) Update:

We have been informed by the Virginia Department of Health that three cases of the H1N1 virus have been confirmed in Virginia. So far, the experience in Virginia has mirrored what has been seen in other states, with cases appearing very similar to seasonal influenza cases. No cases have been identified within our county. Fork Union Military Academy continues frequent communication with the local and district health departments regarding this virus.
