Middle School Headmaster at Tyson's this weekend.

Rob Feathers, our Middle School Headmaster, will be in Tyson's Corner Center Saturday and Sunday at our Kiosk outside of Macy's on the 2nd floor. Rob brings a unique prespective to the kiosk in that he is both the Headmaster of our middle school as well as a FUMA graduate. If you have a son in grades 6-8 and are wondering if boarding school is the "right choice" given your son's age, Rob is the perfect person to talk with.

Parent Workshop

Dr. Barry Hensley will be conducting a workshop for Parents on Friday, 10/17 from 2:30 - 5:30 PM prior to the spaghetti dinner. Workshop will focus on assisting parents with the lifestyle changes that occur when a young man becomes a cadet.

LTC Todd Giszack at Tyson's Corner

LTC Giszack will be in the information kiosk at Tyson's Corner Center this weekend. Our October entry point is around the corner and now is an ideal time to look at enrolling your son for the remainder of the school year. LTC Giszack, the Assistant to the President and Director of Tuition Assistance has been with the Academy for over a decade. Prior to his administrative duties, he served as head of the Science Department and coached cross country and track. Please stop by and say hello.

Chapel message, 9/23/08

LTC Giszack spoke today about sacrificial love. Today, John 15:13 was the theme. LTC Giszack told the story of Maximillian Kolbe from the eyes of Francis Gajowniczek, the man he saved. Kolbe's story can be found here. Then he read the story of Barrabus (Matthew 27:11-26) and inferred that in reality, we are all in the same position as Barabbus was.

Today's message centered on our response to times of adversity. The message this morning focused on the biblical story of Joseph (Genesis 37-50). Specifically, I looked at Joseph's comment to his brothers in Genesis 50:20. Joseph faced much adversity in his life, and his comment that God brought good from all his adversities is a lesson we can all stand to learn.

Chapel message, 9/18/08

The chapel message this morning dealt with acting on what God is telling us. Focusing on James 1:22, we talked about how God calls us to not only hear His word, but call us to act on what we learn. Further, I used Samuel to illustrate how someone can live for God in a place where God is being overlooked or ignored. Also, I explained to the boys that knowing God is different than knowing about God.

Guidance Dept. Launches New Blog

Greetings from all of us in the FUMA Guidance Department. Today marks the beginning of a new era for us as we launch our own blog. We are hoping parents will check this at least once a week as our plan is to use the blog to pass useful information along to everyone at home as well as to the cadets at school. There are several items of interest today: 1) For Washington DC area parents: The Lab School of Washington is offering the Kaiser Permanente Lecture Series for Parents on selected Wednesday evenings throughout the school year.

Chapel message, 9/16/08

The message this morning centered on our value and worth as people. I used the illustration of a plastic plate and a piece of fine china. While I crumpled up the plastic plate, I reminded the cadets that plastic and paper plates are disposable once we are done with them. Unfortunately, too many times we treat people that way and (more importantly) allow people in our lives to make us think that way about ourselves.

October Enrollment

As we approach the middle of our first term in the upper school, the admissions team is actively working with prospective students who are looking at our October Enrollment. We opened with our largest enrollment in several years, and we are nearing our budgeted capacity, so space is becoming more limited for this year. But it is never too late to look at FUMA as an option. Our rolling enrollment allows us to bring students in at key points during the year so they can enter the program and transition smoothly. If you would like to learn more about our program, please call us at 434.842.4205.

Tyson's this weekend and more...

Dr. Grant, our Director of Guidance, will be in Tyson's Corner Center Saturday and Sunday at our Kiosk outside of Macy's on the 2nd floor. Please stop by if you would like some information about our program. On October 21st we begin our second term (my how time flies) in the Upper School and we are currently accepting applications for that entry date. If you would like more information, please give us a call at 434.842.4205. Our Middle School is currently accepting a limited number of applicants for each grade. Admission is done on a rolling basis and space is limited.

Chapel message - 9/11/08

Today's chapel message dealt with Jesus' command to pray for our enemies. On the seventh anniversary of the attacks on New York City and Washington, I challenged the cadets to follow Jesus' command to pray for our enemies. I acknowledged that it is definitely one of Christ's most difficult teachings, but it is also one of Christ's most important. Scripture verses referenced were Matthew 5:44 and Luke 6:28.

Chapel message - 09/09/08

This morning's chapel message centered on our mission trip to China. I shared pictures of our China trip this past July with the cadets, and Justin Edell shared his thoughts on the experience. Scripture verses referenced were Psalm 10:17-18 and James 1:27. Many of the pictures shown to the cadets can be seen by clicking here.
