Wrestling Match Cancelled

The wrestling match scheduled for Thursday, December 16, 2004, at 4:00pm with STAB and St. Benedictine has been cancelled. There is no word yet on if or when this match would be rescheduled.

Fort Defiance High School Wrestling Tournament

By Cadet Bryan Halfpap Last week on December 10 through December 11, Fort Defiance held a wrestling tournament with 12 schools, most notably Fork Union Military Academy, Monticello High school, Potomac Falls High, and Broad Run High. FUMA wrestler Drew Davis placed third in the tournament. When the weigh-in started for the tournament at 8:00, the auxiliary gym of Fort Defiance High was packed with mostly with 103-160 pound wrestlers. There were so many people and so few scales and officials that it took at least an hour to weigh everybody before they could start.

JR Prep Basketball Improves to 3 and 2

Despite falling behind by 14 at the half, the JR Prep basketball team was able to battle back and defeat VES 67 -56. Fork Union outscored VES 25 to 2 in the third quarter to bring the team in front and on to victory. The team is now 3-2 and will face STAB on Thursday for their home opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm.

Courtney Wins Third Trophy

Rob Courtney won his third Debate trophy during the 2004-2005 season at Saturday's tournament held at Meadowbrook High School. Students from twenty-two public and private schools competed in this tournament. Thirty-two students competed in Student Congress. Rob has competed in three tournaments this year and has won a trophy at each one. Rob won third place in Student Congress at the December tournament, second place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the November tournament, and third place in Student Congress at the October tournament.

Some quick sports results

Jr Prep Basketball lost 31-67 to Western Albemarle. Prep Basketball came up short against Western Albemarle, 48-56. Read the Daily Progress article on the game here. In the FUMA Invitational Varsity (PG) Basketball Tournament, Hargrave Military Academy defeated New Hampton in the night's first game. In the second game, attended by the full corps of cadets, FUMA overwhelmed Bridgton 101-92.

Cadet Tyrone Wilson on Dallas radio

Following in the footsteps of Eddie George, who appeared last week with Coach Micky Sullivan and MAJ John DeVault on Friday Night Gladiators on Dallas radio to promote FUMA, Cadet Tyrone Wilson was on the air to discuss his acceptance of a football scholarship to attend Southern Methodist University in Dallas next year. Cadet Wilson met with coaching staff of SMU this past week and both he and senior linebacker Curtiss Powell were offered scholarships to become SMU Mustangs. Both cadets have indicated their commitment to accept the offer and attend SMU.

Payne Foundation Greater Issues Forum

Students, faculty, staff, and guests are cordially invited to attend the second presentation of FUMA's Payne Foundation Greater Issues Forum. On Tuesday, December 14, at 6:30 p.m. in the Beatty Library, Col. Richard Flahavan, a representative of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, will speak about the Selective Service System, and provide an update on the Global War On Terrorism. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

State Qualifiers in Debate

Two members of the 2004-2005 FUMA Debate Team have earned trophies and received invitations to compete at State Finals which will be held on March 5, 2005. Rob Courtney and Jeremy O'Sullivan have become Student Congress State Qualifiers and Rob has also become a State Qualifier in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Rob won third place and Jeremy won fifth place in Student Congress. In Lincoln-Douglas Debate Rob debated the topic, "Resolved: The United States has a moral obligation to promote democratic ideals in other nations." He won second place.

Debate Team to participate in their third tournament

The Debate Team will travel to Meadowbrook High School in Richmond, VA this Saturday to participate in their third regular season tournament. Cadets who will be competing include David Arvelo, Rob Courtney, Jeremy O'Sullivan, Stephen Wilson, Andrew Rademaker, Phillip Park, and Ross Pearce.

Jr Prep Beats Fluvanna in Overtime

Fork Union's Jr. Prep basketball team moves to 2-0 on the season with an overtime win against Fluvanna. The team played well despite falling into foul trouble early in the game. The team squares off against Collegiate on Thursday in Richmond.
