Debate Team Wins Second Sweepstakes Trophy

On Saturday February 18, 2012 seven members of the FUMA Debate Team travelled to Charlottesville High School to compete in the last regular tournament before the States tournament. Five cadets competed in Student Congress and two in Public Forum Debate. The team won the Third Place Sweepstakes trophy in debate.

Competing in Student Congress, Justin Long won first place.  James Sasai, who competed for the first time, and Hanif Kemet-Black were named state qualifiers. This season seven FUMA cadets qualified to compete in Student Congress at States.

Having already qualified for States in Student Congress, Jacob Pritchett and James Theuer decided to compete in a different category -- Public Forum Debate. This was their first time to compete in this event. They won fourth place and were named state qualifiers. Since they also qualified to compete in Student Congress, they chose to compete in Public Forum Debate at States.

The State Finals Tournament will be held at Madison County High School on March 3, 2012. Cadets who have qualified to compete are Brad Chiovaro, Zach Edwards, Hanif Kemet-Black, Justin Long, Jacob Pritchett, James Sasai and James Theuer.
