Individual Attention
To make sure that every cadet receives the individual attention he deserves, classes at the Academy are kept small - in most cases, 14 to 17 students. Every student participates in class every day. Missing class is not permitted except for an illness or emergency.
With the One Subject Plan, the teacher gets to know each student in the class and help meet his individual needs throught the day for the entire term. In a typical school, a teacher may be responsible for teaching 80 to 150 different students every day in several different classes. At Fork Union Military Academy, a teacher has only one class of students each day, every day, for that grading period. Our teacher's get to know their students as individuals, and can work with each student as needed to produce academic success.
Our teachers are dedicated to the challenge of helping young men achieve academic success - and their involvement doesn't end in the classroom. Most of our faculty live on campus, all are required to coach two sports or supervise other extracurricular activities during the school year, and they are experts in helping young men learn responsibility and self-discipline in our structured boarding school environment.
The Academy is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. On a recent visit by the VAIS accreditation team (made up of school heads and top faculty and staff from many of Virginia's best private schools), the team commended the high quality of the Academy's faculty in its written report, saying, "Especially noteworthy is the large number of very experienced teachers on Fork Union's staff."
