Hi! We were excited to receive our application materials in the mail and my son is working feverishly on composing his statement on why he wants to attend FUMA. However, he has attended a state supported, on-line school for the last two years. He has very little contact with his teachers who essentially just grade his work (that is, the portfolio assignments and projects, all of his tests are graded by computer)and have no personal relationship with him. I am his "learning coach" and so I present the material to him each day and make sure his work gets turned in. He is in sixth grade now.

So should I seek out a teacher from his old school and ask them to fill out the form regarding character and maturity, with the understanding that this would be someone who taught him as a second or third grader. Send it to his current teachers who would probably have to answer that they don't know him well? Can I have additional statements sent by someone else who knows him well, like a coach? What do homeschooled students do? That is probably the closest to our situation.

I'd urge you to call our

I'd urge you to call our Director of Admissions, Steve Macek. His office number is 434-842-4205 and his cell phone is 434-962-8024. He can tell you what would be best for your situation. We do work with many homeschool families, so your question is not unusual, but the information we'd need might differ from case to case, so it is best just to ask LTC Macek directly. Steve's a super nice guy and would be happy to talk with you anytime!
