End of Year Events
Fri, 04/17/2009 - 11:59am
This is my son's first year at FUMA, he started in January. I'd like to try and get out to visit before graduation, but was wondering. Would the Mother's Day weekend be the best time to come out (I'm assuming dads come too), or is there another time that would be better to see them in parade dress and such.
It's a long flight out there, want to make the best of it.
thanks

Here is the information on News & Notes article on the Concert.
Mothers' Day Gospel/Bluegrass Concert
Nothin' Fancy, the 2008, 2009 National Bluegrass Entertainers of the Year, will perform on Mother's Day at Fork Union Military Academy. The concert will be held on Sunday, May 10th at 4:00 p.m. in the Wicker Chapel. It will be held immediately following the Mother's Day Parade on our parade grounds. This concert is open to the public. There is no reserved seating and it is first come first serve.
Hope you will be able to join your son then if you can make it before graduation.

Parade weekends
This is my sons' third year at FUMA, and I have not missed a parade. No matter which parade you decide to attend, you will be impressed not only of your son's achievements, but of the entire Corps.
Alumni weekend has several events, including the silent auction. Your post sounds as if you would like to spend time with your son. As Mrs. Liles posted, Mother's Day weekend is a leave weekend. You would get to spend the most time with your cadet that weekend, if he is eligible for leave. The Mother's Day parade is very touching, but that could also be, because I am a mother. :D
That being said, whichever weekend you choose, I promise, you will not be disappointed.

Parade Weekends.
From now until the end of the academic year, each Sunday will offer parents the chance to review our cadets in full dress parade. Next weekend is the Military Ball (which parents are able to attend) followed by the parade on Sunday at 2:30. The following weekend (May 2-3) is our Alumni Weekend with a host of activities on both days and parents are again welcome to attend. Mother's Day Weekend is a leave weekend for students and they return on Sunday prior to the parade. There will also be a bluegrass concert this year in our Wicker Chapel immediately following the parade.
I would say if you choose any weekend, make sure you pick the one that would offer you the most time with your son (if eligible for leave) and also one where you would be able to enjoy some of the other activities going on around the campus.
For specific questions regarding leaves please contact the Commandant's Department.

Any details on what this is? and if not at the campus, where? I'm going to be in the general vicinity and was hoping to see the boy before grad weekend.
