Days that were worse than others
While spending my time doing some easter baskets, I took the time to ponder back on some past memories.
I recall fondly being at my grandparents when I was younger, hunting for eggs in the cold crisp Mississippi mornings. Finding the colorful eggs and the baskets of goodies the easter bunny left.
Then I roll into FUMA, easter filled with the horrors of waking up at 5 am for sunrise services. Sitting in the bleachers outside at the football stadium listening to Chaplin Vaught ramble on as I was half asleep and freezing. After sitting outside for an hour we were allowed to go back to the barracks and lounge at our leisure or go back to sleep for a quick catnap.
Easter to me was the worst day of the year while on the FUMA campus. Even more so than the arrival for the start of the year.
We were spared that one. Of course, we got the infamous "there is no God" sermon. But, at least we got an extra hour of sleep.
Never heard of that sermon... any details?
It was one of the few sermons Vaught gave that has stuck with me. It starts with the statement of "There is no God." Vaught would then talk about the sun shining, birds singing, grass growing, wind blowing, DNA transfers and other evidence of the existence of God. In between each one the statement,"There is no God" would be repeated. By the end of the sermon it became a question, "There is no God?"
It was actually a neat way to look at the arguments between believers and non-believers. Unfortunately, as a cynical teen I would hear "There is no God" and mutter, "Good, can we go back to sleep now?" (I'm lucky no one ever heard me)
My 2009 To Do List
- • Easter Sunrise Service... check.

James, maybe BravoCo or SamW will volunteer to come back and be the guest speaker at next year's sunrise service, since they suggested the idea!
This where you guys are losing me...Didn't spring break coincide with Easter every year?
I swore it did.

Whoa there chief. You are saying that sunrise service is no longer done?

Last year ('06-'07) was my first year as Chaplain. I don't recall a sunrise service being mentioned to me for Easter, so I don't know if LTC Jones did one in the years prior to my arrival. This year, Spring Break coincided with Easter, so there was no opportunity.
This was back with Chaplin Vaught from the early 90's. From 91-95.
