I remember hating waiting in line to get my allowance from Major Sutton (I think it was on Thursdays). A 45 minute wait to get five bucks (increased to ten my Junior year). Five bucks in the PX was like water on a hot stove. A few Choco-Locos, rollos, video games and it was gone.

I remember Captain (later promoted to Major) Sutton sitting at that desk in front of Retan Flag Hall handing out allowance. If it was cold or raining, I think it was moved inside Hatcher Hall.

I remember allowance, but no memory of how I got it. The line and getting it handed to you seem to stir a memory, but I also remember getting a check in the mail from home every now and then. I just don't remember what I did with it--I think there was a bank of some sort at the PX. Just can't remember! I think I got $5.00 every now and then. In those days, 50 cents would get you all the sugar you wanted. The only other things I remember about the PX were the mail boxes on the left as you walked in, the Supply Store (uniforms) from Capt. Hoffman on the right, and the jukebox on the left after you entered the double glass doors into the PX proper. The only thing other than food I remember them selling were trinkets--FUMA keychains (I still have one!), FUMA rings (gave one to some girl I was crazy about--saved for weeks as I think it was around $8.00 or something--and some guys always spilling their drinks by hitting the tall glass bottle with their hand while explaining something or other.

Best PX memory--hearing Jerry Lee Lewis sing Great Balls of Fire when it was brand new and 'understanding' music for the first time. Never forget it!

And the excuses you would give him to get a few extra bucks? "I need a new dustpan..."

I remember Maj. Sutton handing it out. And then the duty was passed on to Cpt. Fender. I think he loved the job, knowing the money would flow right back into the PX.

Ditto for me on liking Capt. Sutton but hating that darn line. By my Junior year I just had my parents mail me a check. While my allowance made Sam's look paltry--a whopping $15/week--it wasn't worth a 45 minute wait.

I horded my allowance in order to enjoy those hoagies Mr. Cobb would make at the PX on Saturday nights. Ham and Cheese or meatball--take your pick, they were both delicious!!!

Check out this Photo

The photo of Maj. Sutton handing out allowance was brought into the Communications Office yesterday. It was in the November 1, 1987 edition of Tidewater Living in the Virginian Pilot. How fitting that the discussion has been about allowance. Today, as noted by Capt. Dan, the Business Office hands out allowance twice a week in the basement of Hatcher Hall.

Captain Dan, it wasn't Major Sutton I disliked; it was the waiting for so long for such little pay off. (Actually Major...General...whatever his rank is now- and I had a great conversation on my last visit to Fork Union)

It sucked even more when you had to buy "Bowling Alley" brand floorwax with it because the roomate bummed the wax off you and you're out.

SamW, you'll be happy to know that allowance is now handed out by the kind and lovely ladies of the business office. But video games are no longer in the Sabre Shop....and five dollars disappears even quicker these days!
