Faculty Nicknames?
Sat, 12/08/2007 - 3:57am
Ok, so this thread might get deleted .... but I remember we had a few nick names for some teachers while we were at the Fork. In fact, I do remember one teacher who was almost insulted that we hadn't given him a nickname. I'd divulge more, but he's still there!
So, that being said, should we wait until folks are retired / out of service with academy to share anything along these lines, or is this a topic which is taboo? Where's the line between fun memories and egging on the next generation? I'd love to post more, but will respectfully wait for some "official" guidance on the matter...

In my day we had nicknames for most of the Faculty and many were of a cruel and tasteless nature. The was Hoppy for a badly crippled Quartermaster ,The Gimp for a French/Bible teacher.Hose Nose for an Academic Dean, Mc Queer for another fellow,Foxy for a rather well liked History teacher who had a distinct vulpine appearance as well as a quick and agile mind, and a few others that wont pass the decency test. I am embarrassed by the unwitting cruelty that we all displayed by these nicknames and am ashamed of my liberal usage of them.

I forgot about Breault's breath. My 8th grade class (1985-86) left a bottle of Scope on his car at the end of the year.
Jack Starry, Will Cline.. good to see your names on here. Remember me? Will, we rode many a Greyhound bus together for leave weekends!

CSM Pate was "Snoopy Big Step" because each step of his were two of anyone elses, no matter how short he was!
In Junior School, Capt. Breault was "Death Breath"

Had Ms johnson for Algebra II. Great teacher. Math was easy for me. I failed College Cal becuase I never attended class. I had an "A" average. I can thank the math dept at FUMA for that.
But yes, Spanish turned out to be a great asset for you. Not so much for me.

Depends on what you do. I use a little Algebra (Thanks Ms. Johnson) everyday, figuring doses for patients, but no other Math routinely (why did I take Geometry? other than to be harassed by Captain Bailey?). The Spanish, however, I use routinely, as Georgia's Hispanic population is growing daily.
So, Again, it depends on what you do for a living.

SHould have stuck with it. Spanish 3 with Golgosky was a blast. We spent a large amount of the time watching Spanish soap operas in the library. In fact, thanks to Golgosky's teaching I was able to curse out my Spanish professor at ECU.
Doing Trig, Calc and Physics did more for me than Spanish 3 would have.

He was still called Gargamel until he left FUMA 2 or 3 years ago. I guess when we pick a really good nickname, it sticks.

That's him. I was in his class for all of 2 hours until the first break. I was transferred into Trig. Spanish 3 was not for me after skating by with D's in Spanish 1 & 2. But yes he was a very nice guy.

Remember Inhuman Shuman. Cpt Ivans had a nickname... Napoleon. I remember the science crew, Sutton and Ransome being mimicked a lot mainly on the way they spoke and dragged out certain words. And most certainly Ransome on "Young Man".
On Col. Ross..."Right smack down on Gina Lolabridgader and number one son!" (Did Mrs. Ross know about the Gina picture?).... to me that was the most annoying phrase on the face of the planet, and I thought he was a horrible teacher. I still do to this day.
One of the spanish teachers was called Gargamel.
The other people we had nick names for: Major Marston, Straughn. We just picked on Straughn by throwing pennies in the hallway during CQ so we could hear him coming. A few times they were glued down.

Never had Ganong for math. I had Sullivan (who you never dared to disrespect), Johnson, Bailey, and Miller (Again, you never dared to disrespect). Probably the instructor who I personally saw take the most grief was Ransone. I don't know if it was the tapes of his wife singing (I still have one somewhere), the letters home, the dental floss or just the fact he genuinely likes the cadets, but poor John took a mountain of crap of cadets. Sad thing is he turned most of them on to the Dead and Zeppelin...

Faculty nicknames
I remember Saputo and I always referring to CPT Ganong (even to his face) as Butt-Chin due to his cleft chin. Pretty funny stuff. Im sure you remember that from Trig class, Will. Saputo and I also had some kind of secret agent nickname for night watchman, CPT Lemire. I cant remember what it was. As far as impressions go, Saputo and I varsity lettered in impersonating people...sometimes well, sometimes very poorly. Always fun, however.

I remember Ishmun Williams did a dead-on impression of Colonel Pulliam, the whole rocking heel to toe and pushing his glasses up on his nose thing.
I never really had any dealings with Shuman. He intimidated the crap out of me, so I was very happy to live under his radar.
Straughan was such an easy target. Almost a shame to hear he's left the academy.

Man...I didn't know about half of these nicknames. I just knew that people could do impressions of almost every faculty member.
Col. Pulliam: "This is no time to do anything that would be detrimental to your standing as a cadet at Fork Union Military Academy."
Major Straughn: "Hhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyy"
Coach Shuman: "You're gonna have a real problem" or "VMI...it's a good school" also complete with an illustration of how he uniquely erased the board (He may have been the most impersonized man during my time there)...I remember he was called "Inhuman Shuman" plenty of times.
Coach Arritt: Who the hell hasn't done a Fletcher Arritt impersonation? My favorite was the year he gave a chapel talk where he mentioned "SHADRACK...MEEESHACK...AND IMBEDNIGO"=--in between putting in digs on his dear friend Major Thomas.
Major THomas: I heard some people that could do a great Major Thomas--but it took talent. What did he used to call people? "Toady creatures" or something?
CSM Pate: Used to speak of himself in the third person. Always good for a few grins.
Major Faix: "Oy"....this was used by people with no originality.
Brigadier General John Ransone: He has kind of the Morgan Freeman thing going on---he could read a grocery list and it would sound profound. He had no signature line...maybe "young man" but he was often imitated...NEVER duplicated.
Col. Ross..."Right smack down on Gina Lolabridgader and number one son!" (Did Mrs. Ross know about the Gina picture?)
Major Lazizza: Impressions were done...but they won't make it past the censor. The man used colorful language and intense gestures to get his point across.
My parents used to do impressions of Col. Gus Lacy--not out of any malice but because they had never encountered a true southern gentleman before they met him. They liked how he referred to the cadets as "fine boys."
I hope I didn't offend anobody--I think this is pretty tame.
