I don't expect anybody to implicate themselves, or mention any names of those who did, but can you remember anybody actually cheating in class?

Only instance I can remember was sitting in Spanish I with Cpt Plunkett. Had a cadet next to me who had his book open on the ground using it for the vocab on the test.

Cheating in class

Our mid term chemistry exam in 1948 was 150 of the 300 terms in the glossary of our chemistry book. Chemistry was my 6th period class so we took our exam on the afternoon of the last day of examinations. Well, by the time we took our exam the word on what was on the test was common knowledge throughout the entire chemistry student body. We didn't actively try to find out what was on the test but as everyone took the test, the word got out.

Our teacher found out we had G2 ed the test so he changed the exam completly for the 6th period class. I made a 62 on the exam, failing miserably. I desperately needed a passing chemical grade, so I explained what had happened to our teacher and he gave me the opportunity to pass the course. He said I had to make at least an A- on the final to get a D for the course year. I made the A-and he gave me a B+ for the year I never even thought of cheating again. It ain't worth it!JKS, FUMA 48

The Honor Code is alive and well.

I never saw anyone cheat and was on the Honor Council. I would have a duty to turn them into Pate had it been the case.

I am going to revive this 2 year old post just for fun(hope I dont crash the servers by posting in excess).

It was 8th grade year. Close to the end. Col. Cobb(then capt) is teaching History. Fun class to be in when you are not the class clown(I knew better, he was also the Middle School FB coach, and i was at his mercy after class). This year I think the clown was a kid called Bunch. This kid pushed all the right buttons. One day Capt. Cobb got tired of Bunch and lifted the desk, with bunch in it and heaved him across the room and right out the door. The upper body strength alone was enough to shut the other cadets up for the rest of the term.

Anyway i digress, I was never a cheat, and not to toot my own horn, but outside spanish, I really dont think I had to do much studying, I had a gift of taking notes and just knowing things from then on. Too bad this left me just after getting into college. Or maybe its still here, but in a useless form, like the exhaustive movie library in my head?

So one day after all our final exams had been taken, we were all called to the middle school study hall for a breifing. At that time they made an announcement that someone had stolen a copy of Capt Cobbs final exam, and that the exam had been passed around to basicaly the whole class. They called off a list of the names and it really was amazing. I was oblivous, I had never heard a word about it. i think there were maybe a doen of us who were not implicated. Anyway, they had to retake the exam, probably ended up with a bunch of D's, but I don't know if anyone was expelled. It seemed like a huge scandal at the time, but I guess its all relative.

The whole time I was at FUMA I could think of nothing but leaving...now there are times I wish I could go back...

I remember who that was and what it was about... it was not lying cheating or stealing, but it was very close to an honor offense.

I vaguely recall that in spring of '88 a company commander (either Charlie or Echo, I don't recall exactly which since I lived in Snead Hall not Memorial Hall) was busted to Pvt for such an offense. I don't recall the details but I do recall him going from Cpt to Pvt while we were in the same physics class under Maj Faix.
I marvelled that he was still in school even though two cadets were dismissed during my years in the Upper School for petty theft.
Perhaps the faculty did not wish to make him repeat his senior year. But that is purely conjecture on my part. I was not on the Honor Council that convicted him.

Hmmm... I felt critical reasoning was something that happened in all my classes; it seemed to be a key feature of the one-subject plan; heck, even Capt. Hazlet can't make Algebra II last svene hours -- though he sure tried!!

I had the same experience. Capt. Plunkett's class was apparently a cheating haven. I remember methods ranged from writing the vocab on the desk to writing the vocab on the board, which he forgot to erase. I never realized how funny that was until just now

The late Col Ross would allow students to exchange papers and grade each other. Robinson and I echanged our quizzes and always did particularly well. Ross would look at us occasionally look at us and raise an eyebrow, and mention our stellar performance.

Our grades would tend to temporarily dip on those quizzes afer such comments . . .

I would have cheated if I could have figured out a way to get away with it. School was for the most part an exercise in memorization. What does that teach us? Critical thinking skills? Not! Reasoning? Nope!

The onlytime I openly saw it was in Religion class. Chaplain Vaught made us list the books of the Bible in order for the final. I tried memorization. Everyone else had these pencils with the books of the Bible printed on them. They all got A's. I got a C. I just couldn't see cheating in church.
