The PX
Sat, 06/24/2006 - 10:29pm
Another late night thought: the PX. It was the center of our day, our temporary escape. Of course, it was also a bit of a pain. I learned to hate waiting in line for mail (by my senior year, I tended to only check mail twice a week, and in the afternoon). I hated playing pool then (I still stink at it, but at least it's not a huge point of honor) and still found myself waiting in line to play on those worn out tables with warped cues. I remember the video games, sadly enough. Who was that guy who was obsessed with XEVIOUS? He was class of '89. Thin, brown hair, glasses.
Of course, there was the food. All the sugar you could afford. Ice cream, candy bars, and assorted sugar bombs. It's nice to be able to purchase Nutty Buddy's anytime I wish.
I remember Captain...what was his name? The PX Manager...Brown? Not Dennis, of course. Anyways, I remember him trying to liven the place up by playing his stereo from time to time. Unfortunately, his taste was country at a time when rap was emerging and heavy metal was still cool.
Ah, enough rambling...

I remember dumping money into Gauntlet...had to ask Major Sutton for an exception to my allowance amount...needed wax, etc. (wink, wink!) Always had to time your quarters on that machine before morning break ended or you had to be back in the barracks on the weekends.
Of course Reynolds and I got smart our senior year when we confiscated someone's Commodore 64 with the Apache Helicopter game and spent our time with that instead of dumping money at the PX.
On another note, anyone remember Captain Brown's thing about Nutty Buddies? I got my rear chewed off on one occasion for asking. Worst part is, I didn't even know what I did wrong.

I was standing in the PX watching the TV when the space shuttle exploded... I had my hostess apple pie and shenandoahs pride chocolate milk... almost dropped them!

(I put this under a thread about allowance, but I think it fits here, too.)
I remember allowance, but no memory of how I got it. The line and getting it handed to you seem to stir a memory, but I also remember getting a check in the mail from home every now and then. I just don't remember what I did with it--I think there was a bank of some sort at the PX. Just can't remember! I think I got $5.00 every now and then. In those days, 50 cents would get you all the sugar you wanted. The only other things I remember about the PX were the mail boxes on the left as you walked in, the Supply Store (uniforms) from Capt. Hoffman on the right, and the jukebox on the left after you entered the double glass doors into the PX proper. The only thing other than food I remember them selling were trinkets--FUMA keychains (I still have one!), FUMA rings (gave one to some girl I was crazy about--saved for weeks as I think it was around $8.00 or something--and some guys always spilling their drinks by hitting the tall glass bottle with their hand while explaining something or other.
Best PX memory--hearing Jerry Lee Lewis sing Great Balls of Fire when it was brand new and 'understanding' music for the first time. Never forget it!

David Bork lives in Columbia, Md.
I remember having an adolescent crush on Pam, the young girl who worked at the PX.

Said video game expert was named Bork. I remember somebody pulling the plug on the game after he had achieved unprecedented success. Nullified the game AND no recorded high score.

..anyone remember a certain big-nosed cadet kicking Shuman's butt at 8-Ball in front of half the corps, then telling him "That's ok, Capt. Shuman -- I don't need yer hamburger," rejecting said prize? Bad vuggum... he shadowed me for the next four years!

On the juke box was the Johnny Cash song, A Boy Named Sue. There was a cadet whose last name was Hsu. I played it for him. He didn't think it was funny. I played Sugar, Sugar by the Archies quite a bit. Speaking of music, I bought my first four LPs whilst a cadet in the 5th grade: Jimi Hendrix's Smash Hits, Steppinwolf's Monster and Iron Butterfly's Ina-Gadda-Da-Vida
In the sixth grade it was Jesus Christ, Superstar, The Who's Tommy, Steppinwolf 7 and the James Gang Rides Again. Capt. Yonce lent that last one to me.

The PX was where I honed my skills at panhandling, should homelessness by chance be in my future.
Fruit pie - 62c.
Chips - 37c. -
"Hey Zaputo, or Long, or whatever your name is, can I bum just like, a nickle? I just need 5 more cents - I can get you back . . ."
Thats where I discovered the tasty combo of a hot dog covered with crushed up cool-ranch dorito's. course that was big bucks - I had to practically cry to get that combo -
7 bucks a week, thats what my folks gave me. I think a pizza was 8.50. Hows that for cruelty?

Poor Bork! He's probably laughing his way to the bank now. He'd have to be a shoe-in for one of the Internet millionaires.
