cockroaches

Remember the size of those freaking roaches?! I swore then that there had to have been some toxic waste or radioactive material that caused their size. But, even funnier was Ishmun's roach traps.
Ishmun got bored one evening and began working on a roach trap. He took an empty 1-liter Coke bottle (with all those trips to Rocco's, we certainly had plenty) and a couple of 3x5 index cards. The index cards he began cutting into strips, leaving them connected by a small portion. He then inserts a dab of peanut butter in the bottle, folloed by the frayed end of the cards. The connected portion of the card was used as a ramp/stabilizer for the bottle. Then, just go to sleep and wait. Everytime he made one we would wake up to a monster cockroach in the bottle.
I wonder if he went to work for Raid or D-Con?

There were two locations on campus that grew the largest cockroaches.
The small swimming pool and locker room under the Junior School gym
In the Armory under Memorial Hall. I was Armory Sergeant in 1988-89. I squashed many a bug under a rifle butt.

Last year my room had a terrible roach problem. Col B came with a can of raid a couple times and it really helped. Most that we saw after that were really crippled. They could barely walk and were easy to kill. I did catch a good one once and took it upstairs to the room of a guy who hates bugs. I dropped it on the floor and he freaked out. It was during morning clean up before Col B was there, so he didnt hear it. They guy screamed like a little girl and jumped on his chair. It was a great sight. The CO and platoon leader came to see the noise, but no one got in trouble of course. They thought it was funny as hell.

I remember in 79 I had to get my bag that was stored under the stairwell of Memorial Hall. I secured a flashlight and crawled in. I remember making sure my bag was going to be in front but somehow it had migrated around the corner. I happened to flash the light beam on the water pipe that carried the hot water to the radiators and this looooonng pair of antenna was waving at me. I shined the light down the hole in the wall that the pipe ran through and there must have been a gazillion of the biggest roaches I had ever seen. It was good thing I was where I was because the language I used would have landed me on the pad for life.

Im in pest control, and I still tell the stories of the FUMA roaches... They are "American Roaches"... they fly. I remember catching them, painting a number on its back with liquid paper, and racing it on 1st platoon E company.
Yeah, one dragged an entire chocolate chip cookie under my bed. I just laid there in my bunk, absolutely amazed. (And I still would slide under the bed in the morning for a few minutes more sleep)

I have not seen bigger ones since I left FUMA. I have to say that the ones in the old Tompson gym showers or the indoor pool were th biggest. I use to lifeguard at the upper school indoor pool and had the chance to see those guys up close when I would turn the lights on...boy those things would scatter quicker than I could run from them.... LOL

It's late August, or early September -- part of me has blocked it out. Me, Tim West and JT Williams are coming back from "orientation," that wonderful period where we read the handbook together. Dread mocus, my brothers. We enter the room, turn on the light, and there on the east wall is the largest insect -- let alone cockroach -- I've ever seen. ANd I lived in DC, and regularly saw th insect exhibit at the museum of natural history, like, monthly. So JT picks up our room broom, and smacks said roach HARD. As the broom comes away -- I SWEAR this is true -- that damned bug, squashed just a bit, shook it off.Actually wiggled has body like that broom strike was nada. Then it scurried off and disappeared like a spell. My first night. Welcome to The Fork.

I hope you are exagerating as to the size of the cucarachas. If not then they have mutated since 1956 or are simply better fed.I never saw any in the Mess Hall as they seemed to prefer food from our CARE packages in Snead Hall.In my day anybody who kept hair spray in his locker would have been laughed out of school, which is why we used starting fluid to make crispy critters
out of roaming roaches .We quickly learned to use looong wooden splints rather than matches.Every now and then a target would explode with a rather odd sound and a very funky odor. The overspray would remove paint, varnish, and wax on contact so it was a bit rough on floors and furniture. It was very handy for a quicky cleaning job on one's rifle as it dissolved crud in the rear sight and butt trap. The casual comedian would carry a small jar of CS2 Carbon disulfide to Class or Chapel and uncork it.Only problem was he had to smell it also.It would clear a room in nothing flat.We were mean little bastards in those days very unlike the thoughtful and caring cadets of today.
