As we all know, Lane was

As we all know, Lane was wrongfully denied his rightful place as BC during his tenure at FUMA. Luckily, we are still all young, energetic, and passionate about doing what we can to right the wrongs of the past. With that being said, and given that we are fast approaching an election year, I believe that we should support Lane Hayden for President.

The Silent Auction is always a popular stop, not to mention an opportunity to acquire some really great items at a good price (all while supporting FUMA). The Alumni Dinner is well attended by wives and children. The parade is also a popular family event.

Each of the Reunion Classes (50th Reunion, etc.) plan their own events which often include off-site dinners and get-togethers with alumni and spouses. In fact, the 1954 Class so enjoyed their reunion that many of the couples continue to get together as a group each year since.

I'm sure we are also open to suggestion as to what type of "wife-specific" or "family-specific" events and ideas might be popular. We've responded to a number of ideas in recent years, with the annual alumni lacrosse game and last year's first annual motorcycle ride being recent examples.

Good question. I am sure there are more married than not at our age. Personally (I am not married) I would like to see something for the wives. They are a huge part of your life now and it seems silly not to shed some light on a former huge part of your life.

I would see what Capt. Dan or Elizabeth Liles has to say. They are around here somewhere...

Just Wondering?

My wife asked me a question today, as I was regaling her with tales of FUMA days long ago. "Is there going to be anything planned with the wives in mind, or is this just for the guys?" I must say I was at a loss. Told her I had never been to a reunion before, much less one for an all male school. I let her know that I would inquire about the upcoming events and let her know as soon as possible. She said if there was not anything planned, she would just as soon stay home. I really would like her to see the place that has meant so much to me and helped me develop my character. Has there been anything decided pertaining to reservations and the like? As the title says....Just wondering?

Reunion!!! Can't be!!!

I am planning on attending the reunion weekend. Although I did not graduate from FUMA, I did attend for four very memorable and formative years. I therefore declare myself entitled! LOL. I cannot believe how quickly the time has passed! Looking forward to hopefully seeing my former classmates...some of which hopefully aged as gracefully as me. (Read... hairline in full retreat). LOL!

Mark your calendars for the first weekend in May of 2008 (May 2-4, 2008), it is our 20th year, and it should be well attended and celebrated.

In order to paln the festivities, we need to get an estimated head count of who is planning on attending. Based on this estimated count, we would reserve a block of rooms at a Charlottesville area hotel, and plan to have a dinner/party on Friday the 2nd. Saturday you would have the option of playing golf, motorcycle ride (Dave Fleenor can fill you in- Dave it would be interesting if you could find a place that rents bikes for the guys that can't bring their own and would like to ride), or play laccrose on campus. Saturday night we'll have dinner in the "new" mess hall, and Sunday will be the parade, along with all the other Alimni day events.

If you are planning to attend post your a note here, or send me an e-mail.

I look forward to seeing all of you next spring.

You should see the campus now. FUMA "stole" a long term employee of Va Tech to take over Grounds Maintainence. He has done an incredible job, not to mention took 5th at the World Ultra Marathon Championships. Campus has NEVER looked better... :D

the planetarium is still there...what you see is a second story addition on top of the science wing of the building. The view of the planetarium is blocked by the 2nd story from the angle of the picture. I believe they added 4-6 classrooms.

Thanks Marvin, it is really easy to get some great shots on campus in the setting sun...everything has a warm and comforting glow.

However, as for nothing changes (if eagle eye Nark does not mention it) something has....You did not look closely. Look at the science building in the background of one picture...notice something different?

You know...all things being equal, the chapel is really a beautiful example of church architecture. The slate roof and Classic lines make it a simple but wonderful building. Just a thought.

John,

I forgot that your brother was a doc. I followed him from FUMA to W&M, and just remembered that he was in Sigma Chi there. He was in SX at the same time as Bill Lawrence, who based 'JD' on a fraternity brother who became a doc. Was it your bro?

I have been back a few times in the last 17 years, maybe 3 I think. The second time I went I was by myself on a trip to Farmville to pick up some furniture from Greenfront. On the way down I stopped in and took a self guided tour down memory lane. It was all going swimmingly until I walked into the gym. The smell hit me like a ton of bricks, bring memories flooding back so quickly, and with such crystal clarity that I was stunned. The visceral emotions of true dispair and loneliness swept over me so convincingly that I was shaking with a sickening kind of fear, like I a trap door had permanently dropped behind me. I turned and literally ran up the hill to the circle with the vigor of a depressed sophmore who had just landed in a time machine and was suddenly set free from FUMA on a cold winters day. It was one of those cold grey depressing days, which just helped make the feeling of terror and being trapped again too real. I was honestly just this side of absolutely terrified and I am normally a pretty even-keeled person and not prone to fits of dementia.

I called my older brother, an 86' grad and a doc, and asked him what happened. He said "Dunno - thats kind of wierd man . . ."

I think I simply listened to the Wall one too many times on grey winters' days . . . seeing that freshly waxed floor reminded me of that day.

HA! Broga, I was going to take a picture of that rug as I walked out of the PX. Decided not to, thinking it would not jar the memories. I know that rug was there in 1982. It seemed like it had been there a while then...LOL. Must be made well, with what I expect it's weight to be, it should have torn from the anchors by now...20-30 years later. I'll be up ther again soon. I'll be sure to get that one for ya...

memories!!!

It is so different, yet so the same. There are buildings I've never seen before, and visions that brought back both good and "not so good" memories. When I saw the doors to the old mess hall, I thought about FUMA burgers, not too bad but resembled a brown jellyfish with all the grease hanging off like tentacles. Also if I remember correctly, ham twice a week...one day with pineapple...one day with raisins. I ate a lot of "PBJ's" on those days. I also remember in the junior school, my tablemates and I finishing almost three gallons of milk at one dinner, then spending the next hour or so before study hall in the restroom. Funny what comes back to a person.

Charles and Kip were the ones that attended the academy. One wanted to be a business man and wear a suit, the other wanted to be a farmer.

The picture is the dining hall entrances we used in upper school. The door to the right was the dining hall adjacent to the jr. school dining hall. The other door was the ramp entrance for the dinig hall just next to the Faculty dining room. Here are what they look like now....Door to the right...

here is the answer to the door...

The door to the old racquetball court in the Upper school gym's basement. The window in the background of the first picture use to be covered by the peg board. Do not forget this court had special house rules...if the ball hits or gets stuck in the exposed pipes that line the ceiling and walls...a do over is called for...LOL

You know...you all are correct on the lighting in the Jr. School gym. They have not improved the lighting, but the removal of the old apts. that blocked the windows, improved the lighting. Good observation. By the way...no correct answers on the "door" picture. HINT...It is a door to an area we were allowed, but rarely used.

Here is a blast from the past...

I have to aggree with Marvin on the lighting. Those windows used to be painted over. It was way darker back in the 80s. My recollection is that there were apartments on the other side of those windows. I remember Major Halliburton coming up and down the outside stairs quite often. I think he lived up by the barbor shop.
The door just inside the main doors to the Jr School gym went to an old projector room, I think. I don't know if that's the blue door you showed or not, Dave.
I didn't go everywhere the tunnels may have gone, but I definitely went through the tunnels from Snead Hall to Hatcher Hall. B co had a door in their basement that led to that tunnel. You could get to it from the Band co basement through a small access hatch that led under the building to the crawl space under the "section." I don't know what access A co had.
We crawled from Band co under the building to the tunnel. From there we took it to B co and to Hatcher. Closer to Hatcher it changed construction. It was a simple trench under Snead, but from there to Hatcher it was a concrete tube. That end of the tube ended looking at the kitchen area of the mess hall.

David, I owe you big time for your help with picture taking today! Having said that, instead of giving Todd your motorcycle in exchange, why don't we work out a trade for some good camera lenses!

I still want to explore the mysteries of the Middle School Gym myself. I'm curious about what's up those stairs when you come in the front door. I also want to finally explore the "tunnels" that I've heard so much about. Maybe we need to get together and do a photo essay for an issue of the Call To Quarters? Especially before the Middle School Gym comes up for renovations as part of our current Capital Campaign...
