myths, legends, lies and rumors
Thu, 06/02/2005 - 9:59pm
Ok, the years have passed and the statutes of limitations have expired. Can anyone shed some light on these infamous FUMA rumors:
1) A whole platoon getting kicked out in 1988 for allegedly dabbling in...mind altering substances?
2) A cadet officer allegedly stabbing the portrait of Dr. Snead in Hatcher Hall after it 'came to life'?
3) Major Spencer bending spoons with his mind?
4) a cadet knocking out Major Straughan for waking him up?
5) the truth about the tunnels?
There are more, but many are obscene and would probably result in lawsuits if posted here. Shame, many were quite funny.

Oh, and those tunnels ya'll are talking about do exist. There used to be a big gate in front of them at the lockers in the Jr. School gym's locker room. I think that gym is either gone now or has been extensively renovated. Good thing as I'm sure the Jr. School cadets got tired of all the asbestos on the pipes.
I believe the entrance got walled up. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
The tunnel is still there, as is the old Jr. school locker room under the gym. The entrance to the tunnel is gated off, but a view down the tunnel is still available.

There was also a rumor of a disused bowling alley.
The bowling alley was under the faculty apts that used to be attached to the Jr. school gym. The balcony, to the apt and also where the barber shop use to be located, was the roof to the bowling alley. It was one lane and had to be manually set.

Unless another portrait has been stabbed, that portrait had that stab mark in it in 1976. The rumor at the time was that a cadet stabbed it when he thought it moved. Easy to believe as all those portraits were painted such that the eyes always seemed to follow you no matter where you were in the room.
I was there when the portrait was stabbed. The Duty NCO must have done that since they spent the night in the Guard Room back then in case an emergency call came in. A big hullaballoo following that one. There were stories of ghosts in Hatcher Hall and one night I was in the Guard Room and at 2am something or rather someone banged on my door several times. Almost scared the pee out of me but I did yank the door open to see the front door of Hatcher Hall closing so I believed it was the Duty Officer messing with me.

Anybody remember the guy that made cyanide in the chem lab and killed himself? The rumor about that I remember was that the guy diluted it and was really trying to get high. I was in Jr. School at the time and it was an Upper School cadet.
I never did hear a satisfactory explanation over that one. It was hushed up rather quickly, or that was what I remember.

I had heard about that but for the life of me I can't remember his name. :P

I thought those guys were first platoon, Bravo. I forgot completely about the "we love FUMA" photo. LOL. There was a guy in Echo (I think the same year) that flashed gang signs for his senior picture. He was from L.A. and NOBODY in central Virginia had any idea what a gang sign was. He was very proud of himself.

That was Corbin - he committed suicide. As I recall the year book had a "dedication" to him.

Dave wood became CO when JArett voluntarily stepped down from the post because he got stuck for having civlian clothes in his footlocker (something like 20 demerits). He didnt like the job I dont think.. ANd we were a bunch of crazies early on in the year when larder, weneta and pat hoffman were our squad leaders.
Wood was an easy going CO.. THey both were really!!

Oh... yes... MR. David Wood. He was a real stickler when he was our Platoon SGT, but from what I remember he was a totally different person the next year. Much easier to talk and hang out with. I do remember him frequently threatening to “stick” the whole platoon. He had a tough group of guys to try and lead. And Bronson sure didn’t help him since he was buddy buddy with some of the worst offenders.

Hey Bravo 1st platoon section here
i would have guessed that tavares, hicks, Byron "skee" chinn and ford were involved in that whole "getting kicked out" the year after I left.
and the guy who graduated with me, trey hein.
There was some serious dysfucntion going on in that company. Made for some serious comedy
we called our company commander "MOM". that was WOOD DR. at least phil ford did.
"Sir, can I look straight too."
anyways, later

Tunnels
I just graduated and i know for a fact the tunnels exist...my friends and i spent quite the time down there...its a little creapy and they are only about 5 feet tall so the hurt your back if your there too long. they run from the middle school gym to the room under what is now friskis room on the back side of hatcher...from there they can either go down to the boiler/laundry room, or up under the chappel to snead then it turns into the snead basement, then they run from under bravo over to the comandants then on to memorial...best way to get around after taps without getting caught...did it many a nights
I was also on bravo 3rd for three years and if your looking for the "best" platoon in the core thats it...never a dull moment, i saw quite a few kicked out in my day with questionable circumstances

This was a "Junior School" faculty member that I am speaking about. It happened during the late 70's or maybe as recent as the early 80's.

let's not forget the '88 class historian (3rd highest gpa) took his sr. photo in a t-shirt with the words "body by jake" or something like that...only he wrote the words on his t-shirt backwards thinking the camera would reverse the image. So the real photo had the words backwards in the yearbook. lol Something to be said about him being 3rd in our class and us being ranked below him.

1988
Dora Bounds had to do quite a bit of tweaking with the yearbook that year. Wasn't that the year the entire front row of the prep football team held their hands in a kind of stupid position that for---whatever the reason---was all the rage in 87-88? (No it wasn't the middle finger, it was this really stupid game of holding your thumb and index finger in a circle and saying "MADE YOU LOOK"). Anyways---I think they had to cut hat picture off at the knees. A couple of guys in Band company tried to be clever and wrote "I Phelta Thi" on their senior casual picture and I know that also got creatively edited out. Wasn't 1988 the year a rather large fellow (I mean HUGE) who was a platoon leader in Charlie Company decided to go take a dunk in the fountain the night before graduation and got to spend his last night on ED and graduate a private? Poor guy didn't listen to Col. Pulliam's final night "Don't do anything that would be detrimental to your final few days at FUMA" speech. 1988---You guys were troublemakers! Even though that was my junior year it was easily my happiest at FUMA---a truly great year. Probably had something to do with finally beating Woodberry--and then in the Spring Fleenor and his posse started "the streak" of track championships.

Mike...Yes. It took me a minute or two, but I do recall the three in "B". I'll just give the first few letters, I would hate to slander and be wrong. They were Sholt..., Gru.. and Presc... I know that was thinly disguised, but if you were not there I am sure you could not finish the names. Sad really, Nark and I went through Jr. School with them. Started in the 7th grade. You spend six years at the academy and they screw-up with two weeks to go!!??? If they had never had it on campus they would have graduated. It was as simple as that...oh well.

Not sure if this is true, but my memory is not that good. But if this was during the 87-88 school year, I was the platoon Sgt for bravo company 3rd platoon (at least up to the last few weeks) and do not remember "several cadets" being kicked out. I do remember a "shake down", but was not involved in any meeting or remember anyone being dismissed. And never heard about the whole platoon being dismissed.
Sam - any idea where you heard this?
Nark/oceanrunner – do you know who they were? Would sure like to remember this!
I remember during my freshman and Sophomore years (when guard duty was held in Hatcher Hall) hearing rumors about an officer that was on duty who was doing his nightly rounds when he saw the portrait of Dr. Snead start talking (or something like that) and he cut the portrait with his saber, but I also remember looking at the portrait and do not remember seeing any signs of it being cut. But I did everything I could (including paying off other NCOs) to take my guard duty...
If my bad memory is not as bad as I think it is... I also heard that Major Spencer could "float" down the alls during CQ, but don't remember the hearing about the bending of spoons.
Did not hear the one about Major Straughan and never saw or knew about any tunnels... wish I had!

The tunnels do exist. The boiler to the academy is behind Hatcher hall, so the pipes would have been laid in tunnels to get from there to the barracks. Lets not forget the tunnel that is plainly visable under the Jr. School gym. The tunnel extends futher than a flashlight can show.
It seems like when I took a look at Dr. Hatcher's painting, I did see a razor cut into the canvas. About the width of a saber, barely visable since it looked like it had been repaired. However, it could have been a brush stroke from the original painter and power of suggestion makes it seem like a cut.
never had Spencer and never heard of a cadet punching out Straughn.

Ah, the good old days. Back when we didn't know what gangs were...
