Mid Year admission
Tue, 12/28/2004 - 10:40pm
I am planning to enroll my son in the 7th grade this January. Are there other parents that are doing the same this year, or have enrolled their son at mid-year sometime in the past? I would like to hear the stories of their sons. What are the pros and cons of mid-year enrollment? Has you experience led you to believe they will settle in fine, or is it best to wait till the next year? Thanks for any help you can give me.

MID YEAR ADMISSION
Our son enrolled in FUMA last year in January. I think being the new guy is a little harder--but the faculty worked very hard, I think, the help our son fit in. If you think FUMA is right for your son then I would not wait until next year to enroll. Do it now. FUMA is a great place. It has helped our son grow tremendously over the past 11 months.

Mid Year admission
I apologize for the delay in posting my reply. I was taking a few days off at the end of the year, as was most of the staff here.
Yes, a number of students come in mid-year - we have about 30 upper school families in the hallway outside my office right now getting checked in, and a number of middle school students scheduled to come a little later in January.
I've seen a number of students come in mid-year and do very well. Like anything, it depends on the student and his family as to how it works out.
One advantage for students arriving at mid-year is that the cadets around them "know the ropes" and can help them get settled in rapidly. On the other hand, they are entering as the "new guy" into a school where other students already have established friends and routines, so it is an adjustment for everyone. If anything, I'd say the adjustment to coming to FUMA in mid-year is probably easier than moving to another type of school in mid-year because of the structure and environment that rapidly assimilates students into the cadet corps.
I hope some other parents will be able to respond to your post, and I'll ask Mrs. McIlnay in the Admissions Office to give her thoughts as well, since they have a lot of experience with mid-year enrollments.
I'm looking forward to meeting your son. My wife Laurie is the Middle School Librarian, also.

Thank you for your replies. If there are other parents out there that have been though this experience please respond to this site or write to me at puertovallarta6@aol.com. I appreciate anything you have to add.
