I was standing by the secretary's desk on the third floor of our building (IBM Boca Raton, FL) and looking out the window as we tended to do when a launch was going on. We all saw the thing split and go in two directions, and I personally thought it looked odd, but I reasoned that this was second-stage separation, although we usually did not see that from our location, which was in South Florida.

Our fellow IBM employees were still very much involved in the program at the time, and we were given the word over the PA system a little while later as to what had actually happened. To this day, when I see that video, I remember standing there and seeing it happen and being uneasy and confused. The thing was, we had been so successful up until that time, we had little reason to doubt that everything went well, especially since the teacher was aboard for this flight.

It is a sad memory that I don't think about often.

I graduated in '68 as CPT of "E" Company and prior to that spent 3 years in the Retan Rifles. After graduation, I went to Univ of Richmond with hopes of medical school. After too many fraternity parties and the decision not to do to Uof R summer school, I enlisted in the U.S. Army. Surprised that I was not sent to Viet Nam, I was sent to Germany. I then spent almost 8 ears in law enforcement and earned my BA in Criminal Justice from Saint Leo Univ. I then decided to enlist in the USCG (too old for OCS) where I served 22 years until I retired in 2001. I have been Civil Service (DoD) since 2002 where I now serve as a Safety & Occupational Health Manager. I plan to retire in another year or two.

I salute all FUMA grads who have served in the U.S Armed Forces or served in law enforcement.

I see now that not everyone becomes a physician, dentist, lawyer, or engineer.

I look back on my FUMA years and now realise they were some of the best years of my life.

 Begin the Year with the End in Mind!  Welcome to 2012!  Many of you are just 143 days away from the Graduation of your Cadet - can you tell what year our son is?  Others of you are in the middle of a productive and successful high school career with your son.  And then there are those of you with a younger cadet that are looking forward to Summer Break!  Please know that winter at FUMA can be a very cold and dreary time for your son.  Your cadet needs you the most during this winter season.  Care packages with extra to share, letters, and emails will all be greatly appreciated!  If you are close enough or have family/friends near by, a Sunday visit and day pass to Charlottesville for lunch and a movie will be more appreciated then you can imagine!  Our son is partial to Buffalo Wild Wings!  Speaking of graduation - if you need a room, the Fork Union Motor Lodge is taking reservations at this time.  The Best Western at Zion's Crossroads is also available.  If you have not ordered your graduation announcements, go to www.jostens.com and search for Fork Union Military Academy.  We wish you a Happy New Year - Go FUMA!  kelly & dee :)
