If you were given two free tickets to any sporting or entertainment event in the U.S., what would be the name of the event or performer printed on those tickets? What advice can you offer to current cadets to help them understand the importance of a good education, as well as how FUMA can benefit their future success? Study skills are important, sometimes more important than the subject you are studying.  If you can teach yourself how to focus and study, then those skills will never stop being useful.

Get to Know LTC Ed Moore - Upper School Faculty

Name:  Edward Van Schaick Moore Title:  Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army, Retired Years at FUMA:  9

Duties: Chairman, Foreign Language Department; Teacher, French, Latin & Spanish; Assistant Orienteering Coach

What is your favorite FUMA memory? What impresses me most about Fork Union is the people. I especially admire their commitment to educating our students in body, mind, and spirit. It is an enormous challenge and a great privilege to be a part of the FUMA team.

In the time you have been at the Academy, what do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment? I believe that my biggest accomplishment has been starting the Latin program from scratch five years ago. I must say, however, that learning modern orienteering skills so that I could help coach our young men was a challenge, not to mention actually being able to complete a course myself!  You can't teach what you don't know!

Get to Know MAJ Carl Muench - Upper School Faculty

Name:  Carl Muench Title:  Math Instructor Years at FUMA:  18

Duties:  Teaching any math from Algebra to Calculus; Physics; Orienteering Coach; IDEA Club Sponsor

Describe yourself in one sentence. I enjoy my family and my job, so I guess I am very blessed.

What is your favorite FUMA memory? I don't think I have one particular memory.  All of my most gratifying memories have come from observing a cadet improving in a way he himself did not think possible.  It could have been a cadet who was not athletic developing into a solid runner, or a young man who was struggling in class suddenly start working and accomplishing complex, multi-step problems.

In the time you have been at the Academy, what do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment? I don't feel that I have a particular accomplishment, but I have a series of goals.

I desire to bring to the classroom a true enjoyment of the mathematics.

I desire, as a person who worked in engineering for a number of years before coming to FUMA, to show the cadets the myriad of applications for the mathematical concepts we discuss.

I desire to prepare my students so that they have the informational background and the study skills to take on the most rigorous collegiate programs.  This includes the ability to research and articulate mathematics using the high quality library and databases the library provides.

Get to know Mrs. Lamb - Student Accounts

Name:  Lisa B. Lamb Family:  Married to Matt Lamb with two children, Alexandra, Sophomore at Virginia Tech and Parker, Freshman at FUMA

Title:  Student Accounts Administrator Years at FUMA:  5 years

Duties:  Assisting families with setting up tuition payment plans; coordinating, maintaining and billing all tuition accounts;  monitoring delinquent accounts;  assisting with yearly financial audit;  helping with allowance duties;  and general "mom" duties to as many cadets as possible!

Describe yourself in one sentence.  A former cadet describes FUMA as intense.  I would describe myself the same way.  Intense.  I choose to work hard and play hard!

What is your favorite FUMA memory?  My son, Parker, completed the Middle School at FUMA and is now a freshman in the Upper School, so we are still making memories.  I will never forget the first parade that Parker marched in.  It was during Parent's Weekend, 2008.  Every year during the Parent's Weekend parade, I relive my first parade as a parent and look around at the parents experiencing their first parade.  I know they are bursting with pride ... just as I was and continue to be yearly.   Priceless!   P.S.  Parker, the parade I am most looking forward to is, of course, Graduation 2015!

Get to know CPT Brian Haney - Upper School Faculty

Name: Brian Patrick Haney Title: US Faculty & Coach Years at FUMA: Six Years

Duties: I teach US History I and II, and Western Civilization. I also coach Jr. Prep Baseball and Jr. Prep Football. I have also coached Cross Country at Fork Union. As a teacher at FUMA, we are responsible for OC duty about twice a month. This duty entails monitoring the cadets after the evening meal, through the mandatory CQ (Study Period) and performing a final bed check to assure that all cadets are in their beds.

Describe yourself in one sentence.  As one cadet calls me "Haney the Frank," I am a man with opinions and I tend to say what is on my mind.

What is your favorite FUMA memory? The best memory was when my oldest son Jeremy graduated from Fork Union knowing that he was heading to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. I do not think he would have made it to the Naval Academy if he had not come to Fork Union. My wife and I knew that we made the right choice for our son to attend FUMA. The choice was rewarded when our younger son Caleb graduated from FUMA and is now also attending the Naval Academy. My daughter Saige will have to forge her own path.

Get to know George Winslow - Upper School Faculty

Name: CPT George Winslow Title: Instructor, Upper School Mathematics

Get to Know Suzanne Grant - FUMA's Quartermaster

Name: Suzanne Grant  Title: Quartermaster   Years at FUMA: 5

Duties:
As Quartermaster I am in charge of virtually anything that a cadet will need in terms of uniforms, from purchasing to stocking to issuing. I also oversee the running of the dry cleaning plant and the sewing room. Transportation is also a major part of my job. I am in charge of scheduling the academy owned vehicles for cadet transport and also chartered buses for some athletic events.

Describe yourself in one sentence. I usually describe myself as intense, sincere and dedicated to any event that I have deemed of interest to me.

What is your favorite FUMA memory? My favorite FUMA memory is not while I have been working here, but while my son was a cadet. I was able to watch my son mature into a fine young man and graduate from FUMA. Watching him walk across the stage to receive his diploma reinforced the decision we made to have him come to FUMA.

In the time you have been at the Academy, what do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment? My biggest accomplishment at the Academy has been to organize the Quartermaster Department to run more efficiently with organization and reduction of inventory. We have incorporated new uniform items that are more durable and retired others that have seen better days. The use of the computer has become a major part of our job.

Get to know Catherine Garcia - Upper School Faculty

Name:  Catherine R. Garcia Title:  Command Sergeant Major, US Army (Ret); Teacher; Coach Years at FUMA:  10 years

Duties:  9th grade English, JV soccer, Quadrille Club & Military Ball, Faculty Advisor for Interact Club

Describe yourself in one sentence. It's more like a recipe:  mix almost twenty-five years of military law enforcement with ten years of teaching; blend in a good sense of fun, a love of creativity, and a desire to follow God's path; place in a rural area and allow to mellow (with as much grace as possible).

What is your favorite FUMA memory?  I can't really pinpoint a specific memory; there's an on-going collection like a photo album. I love watching the kids grow from silly little Middle School students into crazy boys into pretty amazing young men. The process is both frustrating and encouraging; I enjoy being part of it.

In the time you have been at the Academy, what do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment? Wow, I'm not sure - surviving ten years of 9th grade English with my sanity and sense of humor (mostly) intact is certainly up near the top - along with getting through nine seasons of JV soccer without ever leaving a kid behind at an away game or restaurant.  Seriously, I think it is finally getting the Rotary Interact Club started on campus - that has the possibility of having the greatest impact on the greatest number of people.
