Fork Union Military Academy offers an English as a Second Language (ESL) / Leadership Summer Program from:
Your son will improve his skills in English and learn how to communicate effectively in conversation and writing. The English as a Second Language course is academically rigorous and includes four core language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
In addition, your son will learn about American culture and how to use his English language skills in everyday life. Our “cultural immersion” experience will help him put his English knowledge into action on a daily basis.
Our class sizes are intentionally kept small to enhance the educational experience and allow each student to receive individual attention from our teachers.
Your son will be assessed frequently by a specially-trained and licensed ESL instructor, and his individual progress will be tracked as teacher and student work together to achieve challenging goals. Our teachers will communicate with parents frequently to update them on their son’s progress.
Our school is located on a 1,000-acre campus in the rural heart of central Virginia. While we are close to major metropolitan areas such as Richmond and Washington, DC, our campus provides a peaceful sanctuary for learning in a structured and disciplined learning environment.
The Leadership part of the program offers courses in servant leadership, community service volunteering, character building, group and individual problem solving, survival skills and lifesaving, all designed around fun activities.
Your son will develop the skills needed to be a successful leader and to achieve his own goals for personal growth.

Each week our students will have fun while learning and experiencing so much about American culture.
There will be four planned field trips:
During the evenings of the final week of the summer program, we will to teach students what to expect in the traditional school year at FUMA. The students will have the opportunity to work with a current FUMA cadet officer and learn about the daily life of a cadet. This part of the program gives each student the knowledge and security to adjust quickly to the regular school year.
Our summer ESL/Leadership Summer Program ends the day before our fall semester begins. This saves families the expense of travel between the summer program and the regular school year.
The ESL/Leadership Summer Program is not required for all international students entering FUMA’s academic program, but it offers students a good way to get a jump start on our regular school year. The ESL/Leadership Summer Program may be required for some students prior to FUMA enrollment based on their level of English proficiency.
The cost for FUMA’s four-week ESL/Leadership Summer Program is just $5,700.00 per person.
This includes everything from picking your son up at the airport on day of arrival, tuition, room, board, uniforms, instructional material (books), and the cost of all four field trips along with meals, taxes and gratuities. It also includes our Premier Health Plan 1 insurance during your son’s attendance.
Students may want to bring (or have wired) additional money for personal purchases on the field trips.

Some of the application is completed online, and some forms must be downloaded and completed by your son’s current school, teachers, and guidance counselor.
We do not require a TOEFL, SLEP, or SSAT, however it will be an advantage to take and provide us a test score. Admissions preference will be given to any students who have taken any of these test and supplied us with their test results.
You will be required to complete the Immunization and Health Form (must be completed in English) found in our Download Center located online at:
http://www.forkunion.com/downloads
Once your application is complete and all the necessary forms have been submitted, we will schedule an interview via Skype. Our decisions on acceptance are made promptly so families can get the necessary visas and paperwork required from governing agencies.
We will FedEx the acceptance letter, enrollment agreement, and an I-20 form, along with other school information to help you in your planning.
