SAT - The Scholastic Aptitude Test
Today marks the first SAT administration of the 2008-2009 school year. As everyone knows the SAT is an important piece of a college application portfolio and is one of the three most important factors in an admission decision. Although statistically the correlation between SAT scores and college success is not a strong one, it is used as a predictor of how well a student will perform in college.
A student's first SAT should be taken no later than the end of grade eleven and all students should plan to take it again in the fall of senior year. Test preparation courses, workshops and individual study can help a student raise his/her score, but we need to recall that SAT stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test.....it is not an achievement test. This is exactly why all students should also take at least one ACT test. The American College Testing service exams is accepted by all but five colleges in the U.S. as an alternative to the SAT. It is made up of 4 sections: English, Reading, Math and Science Reasoning. This test more closely parallels what students study during their years of high school and many students find they perform better on the ACT, especially on the English and Reading. For more information on either test, please go to collegeboard.com or act.org.
