Chapel message, 9/30/08

Today's message centered on the negative power that words can have.

Do you remember the World War 2 campaign to remind people the "Loose Lips Sink Ships?" I shared this with the cadets, showing them pictures of some of the popular posters from the '40s with this motto. I used that illustration to let the corps know that while we don't have to worry so much now about loose lips sinking ships, our loose lips still sink relationships.

Using the scriptural references of Proverbs 18:21, Proverbs 16:28, Proverbs 17:19, Proverbs 12:18, I let the cadets know that God wants us to be mindful of the power of our words. While the power can sometimes be good, it can also be very harmful to the relationships in our lives.

I asked the cadets to consider recent situations in their lives were words that either they said or were said to them had a negative impact. I challenged the cadets to try to adopt an attitude of encouragement in their verbal exchanges.

Using this following quote, I mentioned that gossip is a dangerous habit to become involved in: "Gossip needn’t be false to be evil – there’s a lot of truth that shouldn't be passed around" (the quote was by Frank A. Clark).

Capt. Benson,
Thank you for your chapel messages. I love reading about what you are sharing with the cadets. Also, in my small group Bible Study, we are seeking to "bow our words" as an act of worhip.
Blessings!
Wendy
