If you are looking at FUMA for the fall, our summer session may be a good opportunity for your son to experience the academic and athletic riches of Fork Union before the regular school year begins.
The main difference between the summer and regular sessions is that we do not wear the military uniform. Instead, our students wear khaki shorts and a Fork Union polo shirt. There are many academic and athletic options avialable, along with our supervised study period each night. If you wish to see more information about our summer session, please follow this link.
For international students we offer an ESL class. This is a great starting point for those students studying in the US for the first time who wish to improve their English skills as well as their understanding of US culture in central Virginia.

I recently had a discussion with a colleague regarding the number of times we get asked the question: "Don't you take anyone who applies?"
Believe it or not, the admissions process to FUMA is as stringent as other college preparatory schools. We look closely at a student's background and general ability level and try to make sure each young man that comes to the Academy is "mission appropriate." We want to afford young men an opportunity to be successful at FUMA, and not merely to "throw caution to the wind" and accept a student "hoping" it might work out.
Fear not, poor grades are not an automatic disqualifier, provided everyone feels it is within a student's capacity to handle the coursework here. For that we rely on standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, and any other information schools and families can provide. If we are still unclear of a student's academic qualifications, we may ask the family to see an educational consultant who specializes in screening for military boarding schools. This affords them an objective "second opinion."
What about behavior? FUMA does not enroll young men who have a scheduled court date or who are otherwise in trouble with the law. For years, military schools have fought the stigma of being "glorified reform schools." This policy helps us insure that is not the case. Furthermore, a student's conduct at his previous school, his discipline records, and teacher evaluations are reviewed.
By the numbers: If you are still in doubt then note that last year FUMA received about 500 applications for fall enrollment. Of those, 310 were accepted. Historically, the acceptance rate has been between 40 and 60 percent.
Wondering if FUMA is right for you? Please give us a call and let us answer any questions you may have. 1.800.462.3862
