FUMA Flu Update

As you know, seasonal flu strains circulate widely each winter. This year the new flu strain, 2009 H1N1 (also referred to as swine flu) has emerged to cause illness as well. This strain is spreading statewide in Virginia and has recently been identified on the Academy campus. To date, 2009 H1N1 flu virus has caused similar symptoms and the same severity of illness as the seasonal flu strains that we see every winter. Flu can be easily transmitted from person to person, so we continue to take steps to minimize its spread at Fork Union Military Academy.

Update on FUMA's Influenza Vaccinations:

The seasonal flu vaccine has been administered at FUMA! We are currently waiting for the arrival of our H1N1 vaccine supply. All parents should review the H1N1 Vaccine Information Sheet from the CDC. Any questions can be directed to the nurse on duty, 434-842-4310.

What's FUMA doing about the H1N1?

Influenza like activity is rapidly increasing within the United States. Last week, Virginia surveillance reports maintain influenza activity at the "widespread" level which means that influenza is present in three or more of Virginia's five regions. Fork Union Military Academy is working in accordance with the Virginia Department of Health, following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). FUMA has created a plan to include prevention, as well as, interventions.

It's Almost Time!

It's Almost Time! Fall school admission is just around the corner. We are looking forward to a great and healthy year! Just a reminder that all students (new and returning) are required to have a new health form (as can be found on our download center under Health Form) completed and returned to the infirmary for each school year. You may mail, scan and email, or fax the forms. Please be sure to keep a copy for yourself and bring it with you on check in day, just in case the original hasn't arrived yet!

Swine Flu (H1N1) Update:

We have been informed by the Virginia Department of Health that three cases of the H1N1 virus have been confirmed in Virginia. So far, the experience in Virginia has mirrored what has been seen in other states, with cases appearing very similar to seasonal influenza cases. No cases have been identified within our county. Fork Union Military Academy continues frequent communication with the local and district health departments regarding this virus.
