The 4 Fs of Fall Health

As I gaze about the FUMA campus and surrounding countryside, I want to share a quote of Faith Baldwin's. "Autumn burned brightly, a running flame through the mountains, a torch flung to the trees."

Fall is certainly here, and along with its magnificence and beauty, it brings changing health challenges. The flu season has begun, allergies are in full swing, and colds are on the rise.

Prevention is the best solution. These are the "4 Fs" of a healthy season:

1. Fill up on great seasonal fruits and vegetables. While "tricks and treats" abound, consider passing up that fat producing candy and pies for foods that are high in fiber, low in fat, and full of vitamins and minerals.

2. Faithfully and fastidiously wash your hands, especially before eating. Any germs to which you may be exposed by touching surfaces in the classroom, office, bathroom, or through a handshake, can be cleansed away with thorough, effective scrubbing and rinsing of your hands.

3. Fit in time for a simple, safe, and effective exercise program. It must be tailored to your lifestyle and schedule so you are able to accomplish your personal goals.

4. Flu shots are another easy way of avoiding illness. While they are not 100% effective, they do greatly lessen the chance of serious complications and even death secondary to the flu.

The Pure Whey

The teen years are a very important time for growth and development.  Please be reminded that performance enhancing supplements are not allowed on the FUMA campus.  Most have not been approved by the FDA or American Board of Pediatrics for use, and may contain harmful ingredients that can cause heart problems, cancer, liver and kidney disease and even death.  Energy drinks have the potential to be equally dangerous.  While most are very expensive and nonreturnable, they are confiscated when discovered since they are contraband and unauthorized.&n

A Simple Way to Fall Registration in the Infirmary

Wow, where has the summer gone? We have completed a very successful Summer School and are gearing up for an exciting new school year.

Please remember that every cadet, new or returning, must have an updated physical and Health Form and Immunization Record. Carefully read the form and complete it fully, giving close attention to the immunization requirements, and the annual TB skin test. The Commonwealth of Virginia may have different vaccine regulations than your home state.

Summer is Near!

Congratulations to all of you that have cadets completing a successful year at FUMA. It has been a pleasure to get to know you and your sons.

For the Upper School, please remember to stop by the Infirmary and pick up any unused medication your son may have. We will remain open until 1300 Saturday, May 28th, closing for the graduation ceremony, and reopening when it is over.

Medications for the Middle School cadets will be available after the Middle School Graduation, in front of the Middle School.

Have a wonderful, safe, and blessed summer.

Healthy Holiday Hints

What could bring the FUMA cadets stress over the holidays? Shopping at the mall? Which movie to see first? My girlfriend is having a bad day! Mom and Dad are a wreck. My little sister cries all the time. Well here are some hints on how to stay on the healthy mind, body, and spirit track!

Traveling home and being with family and friends exposes you a huge amount of germs; where people like to mingle, so do “bugs”. They lurk on hands, cell phones, keyboards, eating utensils and beverage containers. Wash your hands often and do not share food or take sips of someone else’s drink.

Immunizations and Whooping Cough

There are many required immunizations in school age children and adolescents, and those that are recommended. Vaccines protect us from preventable diseases. Please allow me to share information with you, provided to the Infirmary, by the Virginia Department of Health in a recent issue of their newsletter. The article titled “Pertussis or Whooping Cough, What you Need to Know”, tells us that whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection.

Fall Entry Nears

As we quickly finish summer school, we anticipate a smooth beginning to the 2010-2011 school year. You may assist in that goal by remembering that all students, both new and returning, are required to have a new Health and Immunization record completed.

This form may be found under the Download Center of this website.

Please pay close attention to the immunization section, since there have been several changes to the Commonwealth of Virginia requirements.
