How much will it really cost?

One of the most frustrating aspects of the college selection process has been determining how much the total cost will be. As of November 1st all colleges are required to have a tool on their web site that will greatly facilitate this process. Parents and students are prompted to enter information about finances, family size, etc and will be presented with the "real cost" of that freshman year of college for their new collegian. For many families knowing this "real cost" can be the deciding factor on which college to attend.

Boy Scout Popcorn

FUMA Troop 125 is participating in the annual Trail's End Popcorn sale. Many varieties of popcorn are availalbe as well as Virginia Diner peanuts. These are excellent products and 70% of the proceeds comes back to local Scouting. You may place orders through CPT Eldridge or Dr. Grant. Some items are in stock and available for immediate delivery.

Cell Phones for Soldiers

For the past two years FUMA has been a collection point for the Cell Phones for Soldiers project. This activity collects de-activated cell phones which are then sent for re-cycling. Each recycled phone garners enough funds to purchase a one hour pre-paid phone card which is given to a US Servicemember stationed overseas.

Thus far, FUMA families and friends have donated over 300 phones, thus allowing 300 soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen to keep in closer contact with their families. Please take a few minutes to gather up any old phones you may have at home or your place of work and bring them to campus when you come for Parents Weekend.

Why take both?

We are often asked why we encourage students to take both the SAT and the ACT as part of their college admission portfolio. The answer is quite simple.....all colleges will accept both tests and students often do better on one test than the other. Thus, by taking both tests they are maximizing their chances of a good score. Historically more students do better on the ACT than the SAT because it more closely parallels what they study in their high school courses. Statistically the ACT is the easier score to improve through study and preparation. Unless a cadet simply can't bear to miss a Saturday morning inspection, he should take both tests at least two times.

Where do we begin?

As senior year begins, many students and families are a bit lost as to how to begin the college applicaiton process. Students who were 11th graders at FUMA last year should be on target as they were directed to the College Application Handbook in their first junior guidance conference. These conferences also guide them through the many variables that must be considered when they build their college list. Their summer assignment was to finalize their application list prior to returning to school....many have done so and are ready to actually begin filling out applications.

Parent Link to PowerSchool

We will be moving Power School to an off campus server early next week. After a day or two of field testing the new version we will be mailing letters with user names and passwords for all parents. Cadets will obtain their access the following week.

Rising senior task

Greetings,

I would like to remind all rising seniors that you are to report to school with a WRITTEN list of colleges you have investigated, that would be good places for you to go to school and to which you have decided to apply. You can always add and delete colleges as you progress through the application process. Your junior year of exploration is over.....fall is the time for action. Please feel free to email at me if you have questions prior to coming back to school.

Cell Phones for Soldiers

As you prepare to come to campus for end of the school year activities and to pick up your cadet for the summer, bring along any de-activated cell phones you might have lying around your home or office. We send them to the CPFS project for recycling. Each phone buys a one hour phone card for a soldier deployed in Iraq or Afganistan. To date FUMA has collected almost 400 phones in the ongoing project. Collection boxes will be located in the lobby of Hatcher Hall, at the Middle School and in the Upper School Commandant's Dept. Do your part to support our Troops overseas!

Tyson's Corner Kiosk

Dr. Robert Grant, Director of Guidance and Counseling, will be manning our Tyson's Corner kiosk this weekend, May 7th and 8th. If you are in the area please stop by and visit.
