Charlie Bauman
LB
FUMA, Class of 1976, PG
Clemson
No, Charlie Bauman may not have played in the NFL, but you will remember him. He played a role as a footnote in a sad piece of college football history.
Bauman has the distinction of playing in the Gator Bowl as a sophomore linebacker for Clemson facing Ohio State University coached by Woody Hayes. OSU was trailing Clemson 17-15 but in the final minute was threatening to score, 3rd and five on the Clemson 24 yard line, until an errant pass was intercepted by linebacker Bauman. As Bauman was forced out of bounds on the OSU sidelines, Coach Woody Hayes ran up and punched him in the head or shoulder. It was this unfortunate moment that ended Hayes' long coaching career, as Hayes was fired the next day.
Video of this infamous moment can be found on YouTube.com:

Johnny Clowes started out playing in the All-American Football Conference. The AAFC was the brainchild of Chicago Tribune sports editor Arch Ward and challenged the NFL's football supremacy briefly from 1946 to 1949, attracting many top players. Arch Ward also started baseball's All-Star Game and football's College All-Star Game, but the AAFC was not to be as long-lasting as those and folded in 1949.
Clowes then moved to the New York Yanks in 1950. The Yanks were formed as a new NFL team in 1949 and played that year at the Polo Grounds. In 1950, they moved to Yankee Stadium for their games and picked up many top players, including Clowes, after the AAFC folded in 1949. The Yanks had a winning season (7-5) in 1950 but fell back to only one win (1-9) in 1951.
A group in Texas acquired the rights to the New York Yanks franchise and the team became the Dallas Texans in 1952. In 1953, the team was moved to Baltimore where they became the Baltimore Colts.

John Dorsey's playing days were cut short by a freak knee injury during pre-game warm-ups before the Packers' season opener in 1989.
Since his days as a player, Dorsey has continued to work in the NFL, beginning as a college scout for the Packers in 1991 and promoted in 1997 to head up the college scouting department. He was hired as the Director of Player Personnel for the Seattle Seahawks in 1999 and left that post in 2000 to return to the Green Bay Packers as Director of College Scouting where he remains today.
He is on the board of directors for National Football Scouting and has served as a member of the NFL College Advisory Committee.

Darren Drozdov cut a striking figure in his rookie year with the Denver Broncos. His tattoos, mohawk hair cut, and habit of vomiting prior to each game was immortalized on film during a Monday Night Football game against the Dolphins.
Drozdov's colorful football career was cut short by a mid-season knee injury, but Droz "Puke" Drozdov soon emerged in the rings of Worldwide Wrestling in 1998. He was featured in the documentary film "Beyond The Mat."
Sadly, in 1999 his pro wrestling career was ended by an unfortunate ring accident injuring his neck and rendering Drozdov a quadriplegic.

In an interesting bit of trivia, John Hilton caught the last touchdown pass of quarterback Bart Starr's career in 1970, making Hilton one of the great quarterbacks last tight end targets.
One of Starr's earliest tight end targets was another FUMA alumnus, Steve Meilinger, catching Starr's passes in 1958, the quarterback's third year in the league.
Hilton also caught Starr's first touchdown pass on Monday Night Football in the fourth Monday Night game to be broadcast.

Known as Kentucky's "One Man Gang," Steve Meilinger was an All-American college star on Coach Bear Bryant's Kentucky team.
Although drafted as the 8th overall pick in the first round of the 1954 NFL Draft, Meilinger completed his military service obligations before entering the NFL in 1956.
Injury sidelined him in 1959 and cut short his career in football.
In the NFL, he became perhaps the only player to play under three of football's greatest coaches during his college and pro career: Bear Bryant at Kentucky, Vince Lombardi in Green Bay, and Tom Landry in Dallas.

Merling was selected with the 32nd pick of the 2008 NFL Draft, which ordinarily would place him in the first round of the draft, but because the New England Patriots had their draft pick taken from them by the NFL as a disciplinary action, the 32nd pick fell into the 2nd Round in 2008.

Tom Miller's career in football spans four decades and covers much history.
His playing days began in 1942 with the Philadelphis Eagles. He spent 1943 on a team popularly known as the "Steagles." With World War II raging and the population of NFL athletes depleted by armed service commitments, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadephia Eagles combined their teams to play the 1943 season. Miller finished his playing career at the Green Bay Packers.
He then rejoined the Packers in 1956 as Director of Publicity. He became Assistant General Manager under Vince Lombardi. He headed up business operations for the Packers from 1967 to 1987, becoming Assistant to the President in 1981. He retired in 1988.
Miller was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in honor of his service to the Packers organization.
Miller died in December, 2005 at the age of 87.

2000 Jacksonville Jaguars

Eric Moss, the older brother of NFL wide receiver Randy Moss, played tight end at FUMA, catching 28 passes and scoring 7 touchdowns. He played several positions including tight end, fullback, defensive tackle, and offensive line while at Ohio State.
Moss returned to football in 1997 and was signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an offensive lineman where he was soon joined by his younger brother, Randy. Injury sidelined Moss for the 1998 season.

"Bud" Sherrill was FUMA's Outstanding Athlete of the Year in 1946-1947, having excelled in football, basketball and track. He won a number of medals in track and field. Sherrill was awarded a scholarship to the University of Tennessee in 1947. He played football there for four years - primarily as a defensive half-back. In 1949, he set a single season pass interception record (12), which held for many years. He was also chosen to be on the 1951 All-Stars Team. He reported to the Bears' training camp that summer, and later to the "All-Stars" Camp. While with the All-Stars, his right shoulder was injured, and as a result he was unable to play during 1951.
Bud was called to active duty in 1952 and served in Korea. In 1954 he hoped to resume his pro career when he asked to be traded from the Bears to the Redskins, but after a coaching change at Washington he asked to return to Chicago. George Hallas agreed but, before they could execute their option, he was picked up by the New York Giants. Vince Lombardi was the offensive coordinator for the Giants when "Bud" suffered a career-ending knee injury.
In 1958 "Bud" coached the Norfolk Navy Tars and from 1983-1986 he coached the punters and kickers at FUMA as a volunteer.
